Does anyone know a jaunty morris tune, which I think is called 'Tom Bucket's'? Have tried Googling it under various spellings to no avail.
(I'll spare you my abc, but it starts a bit like Humpty Dumpty!)
No, it's not that one. Tom Bucket's was taught by John Dipper at a fiddle workshop in Bristol recently. I think he said it was downloadable from his website, but unfortunately that has a problem not of his making - it mysteriously demands a sign-on name and a password, so no-one can access it at present. The problem is being looked at ...
David- I'm pretty sure it's not Lumps of Plum Pudding- only the first four notes of 'Tom Bucket's' sound like Humpty Dumpty, by the way.
Trevor's recent post of one of John Dipper's groups - 'Methera' -in the recordings section led me to listen to them just now on Myspace- wonderful stuff.
Have just e-mailed John, tho' he's a busy man, but with luck should get some info on the tune soon- I'll post it here if I do.
Lumps of plum pudding and pieces of pie
My mother did feed me until I did cry
I've eaten so much that I think I might die
From lumps of plum pudding and peices of pie.
"Lumps of Plum Pudding" is the first tune on track 7 of the Methera Quartet's new "Methera" CD (see Recordings section). Well worth listening to. John Dipper is a member of that quartet.
Now, although I was at John Dipper's workshop last weekend I don't recollect learning "Tom Bucket" in the group I was in (says it all really!), but P-K was in other group, so perhaps he can confirm if Lumps of Plum Pudding on the Methera track is related to Tom Bucket.
Lumps of Plum Pudding was recorded by John Dipper for a BBC archive in 2006, and his playing on the Methera track is close to the sole version of this very old morris tune given in Lionel Bacon's “The Morris Ring”.
I've had me another listen (Middle Voice) , and 'Lumps' could be described as a first cousin once removed of 'Tom Bucket's', but it's not the same tune.
To bring the Tom Bucket story up to date, just had an e-mail from John Dipper, of which the relevant bit is:-
- "I learnt the tune from a session in a pub somewhere - so I shall go and enquire further about the name - I thought I had got it correct, but maybe its a case of Chinese-whispers?"
Bucket?

Re: Bucket?
Strange, though, that the title should not come up on Google.

Re: Bucket?
There's a tune called Tom Hackett's Dream, but it doesn't start like Humpty Dumpty. Or maybe it's "Bouquet", not "Bucket"

Re: Bucket?
Just checked the midi of Tom Hackett's Dream, but that's not it, I'm afraid.

Re: Bucket?
Lumps of Plum Pudding always reminds me of Humpty Dumpty, and Google 'associates it' with John Dipper.
But, thinking about it, quite a few Morris tunes remind me of Humpty Dumpty.

Re: Bucket?
Moreover, a nice lady told me this morning that the name might have some connection with Thomas a Becket.
