Comhaltas/Ceoltas

Comhaltas/Ceoltas

There may be an obvious answer to this that I haven't spotted. But here goes anyway...
I'm baffled that Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann sometimes seems to get referred to in writing as Ceoltas. The same distinction can be heard i.e. between something like 'coal-tas' and 'kyol-tas'. What's going on? Mr Google doesn't seem to want to help.

Re: Comhaltas/Ceoltas

I have been guilty of pernouncing it wrong in the past. The correct pronounciation (and I have been corrected by senior kyol-ty heads in the past) is:
Pr: Coal-tas_Kyol-tory_Eireann

Re: Comhaltas/Ceoltas

It's one of those unfortunate mispronunciations where two similar words are adjacent, like "Hari Kari" and "Klu Klux Klan"

Not sure why those two particular examples sprang to mind :)

Re: Comhaltas/Ceoltas

I always assumed 'Ceoltas' was coined as a wordplay, incorporating the words 'ceol' and 'comhaltas', thus killing two birds with one stone - after all, 'comhaltas' just means 'society' or something to that effect, doesn't it? No doubt many who use the name now are blissfully unaware of this, and think it is the proper way to pronounce 'comhaltas'.

Re: Comhaltas/Ceoltas

We have a fine lake in the area named Cultus (pronounced the same way). Makes it easy to remember.
