I moved to Pensacola, but every time i play an Irish fiddle tune, someone says "wow that was great! Do you know any Cajun?"
I have nothing against cajun, but does anyone out there know were i can find a good irish session within 100 miles? Or am i the only Irish musician in North Florida?!?
Andy, go down to Maguire's Irish Pub on a Friday night and ask the professionally annoying (it's part of their act, offstage they're passably personable) musicians where the sessions are. There's also a violin shop in the northwest end of the Pensacola area owned by a woman who seems to know who's playing which music locally. If memory serves right it's called Ye Old Violin Shop, but it's been a few years since I was in that neck of the woods....
Even if you don't find much going on, don't give up. Pensacola's population turns over fairly frequently, what with the Naval Air station, the junior college, and retirees from the north. There used to be an old accordion player from Chicago who retired on Pensacola Beach, but I think he's now in the session with Frankie Kennedy, P.J. Hayes, Junior Crehan, and Michael Coleman....
Hello there,
From Manchester UK. July 19th I'm making my first trip over the pond to Orlando for a fortnight. Whilst I'm genuinely looking forward to sharing with the kids the delights of Micky, Minnie, Donald, Goofy etc etc I'm sure going to feel the need for some music and craic.
Any advice?
I noticed a post saying somewhere called "Claddagh Cottage" on a Wednesday.
Is this still on and are the kids allowed in?
Brendan, the last time our family did the Disney thing, the best music and craic I found were with a gypsy band playing near the Hungarian Pavillion at Epcot. The fiddler knocked my mouse ears right off, and the singer was incredible. It wasn't Irish, and they barely spoke any English, but it was great fun, and it continued during their beer break. At first they seemed amazed that anyone had actually listened to what they were doing, then stunned that a sunburned eejit Yank in khaki shorts and a t-shirt could play any "European" music. (They thought Beare Island Reel was a great tune, especially when the fiddler got it in two tries and improvised an up-the-neck harmony on the spot.)
No doubt this band long ago returned home, but if you get desperate, nose around the international pavillions...and stay for the shock and awe fireworks display just before closing.
For the Orlando question, yes there still is a session at the Claddagh Cottage every other Wed - it just took place this week, so that will let you know if it's going to happen when you are in town. Vicki & Scott, who run it, are very friendly. I'm not sure about kids, though I was there one night when a patron had their dog inside - the dog was drinking a Guinness, of course...I can give you more info off list, or you can call the pub when you get in town to get directions. I'm not from Orlando, so I can't give you good directions...
What instrument do you play? Or are you a singer?
Hi Andy,
This is a bit of time past your posting, but I am going to be in Pensacola in a couple of weeks and was wondering if you have found any sessions. I play fiddle, intermediately. I have already found the website for McGuires Irish Pub and I do plan on stopping by there, but would love to go to a real Irish session!
Thanks!

Here in Tallahassee we have a small irish scene. There is a once a month session at the Warehouse. Its on the first Saturday of the month. Call Gordon's String Music at 386-7784, he is the local trad music store here in town. He is a great bluegrass and irish musician.
Dont know how far Tally is from Pensacola is, but it might be worth a shot. Feel free to drop me an email at picklesbd@yahoo.com for more info.
Hey all,
I'm in Panama City, about two hours from Tally. I've got the same problem, if there is any Celtic music music scene here to speak of I don't know about it. Definitely give me a shout if anything's going on! violinx@yahoo.com
