On my daily drive home, overlooking the freeway there's a billboard with a big red diamond enclosing large white copperplate letters: DOW. I think, hellz yeah!
LOL! You've got to give it up for the three variations of O'Boobigan's hornpipe in the space of like 15 minutes, or whatever the heck it was. ASTOUNDING!
The word seems pregnant with meaning, indeterminate but probably baleful. It's the sort you might find in a book of North Country folk-tales, in the kind of story that goes like this:
THE SPINDLESTONEHEUGH FARMER AND THE DOW
One winter an old farmer made a big mangel-wurzel clamp. It was very hard work, but when he'd finished he went to bed dreaming of spending the winter living on them and keeping his animals fed.
After dark, the Dow came. It was his particular pleasure to undo constructive work, even more so if doing this was difficult, laborious and entirely pointless. So he removed all the worzels and threw them in the river, and filled up the clamp with river-stones, with a pile of worzels put back in the front for looks.
When the farmer found out, he was not as upset as he might have been, for he'd taken out insurance and - after a satisfying bout of self-medication in a pub - he got the replacement of the worzels sorted out with a smart young chap in an office in Alnwick who concluded by saying, "A pleasure to help you, sir - my family has had a feud with the Dow since 1299." A squad of Poles was employed to fish the worzels out of the river and soon the clamp was back to new, with cameras and other distasteful gadgetry trained on it.
The Dow came back and saw all this. "I'm wasting my time here", he said to himself despondently. "Bloody interfering nanny state."
Getting away from the UK was one thing, getting into Australia was another. As the Dow approached the immigration desk, the officer with corks dangling from his hat towered over the offensive Northumbrian sprite. There was a long crocodile behind; it savaged his foot.
"What's *your* line, then?", the officer menaced.
"I am a traditional prankster".
"Arts Council b*ll*cks?"
"I said, "Traditional."
But the way he said, "traditional", woke up the immigration man: it came out as "Trhrhrhrhwwaditional"...and the man not only recognised another Northumbrian, but knew exactly who he was. "You're one of the Dows of Bedlam Loup, you helped my family against the Armstrongs in 1402!
'Look, I can't do very much for you, I mean, we normally only admit people who are beautiful or intelligent. But there's still the odd dwarf-hurling racket going on in the outback, and you'd fit the bill for that. I'll stamp you as "entertainer" and let you through."
Drawing himself up to his full height, and looking rather like a scaled-down version of Will Atkinson, the Dow gravely thanked the officer and set out to start a new life in the Lucky Country.
Dow?
Who?
What a strange name. Why doesn't this person come on here with a normal name like Mark Anderson, no that would be really weird... what about D Maneak Snorr?

There is no moral to this tale.

In Scotland I have found a pub and a mortgage company named after Dow. Well done.

I saw a sign outside a chemical manufacturing plant with "DOW" written on it, that was a good day.

Re: All hail the mighty Dow
I don't know if our Dow would be very involved in the chemicals. Probably more likely to have a brewery connection.
But his manual dexterity is pretty good: he can disassemble, repair & reassemble his concertina within a couple of minutes if he's in the mood.
