I've seen a few discussions on Irish/Celtic sessions in other parts of Ontario or on the outskirts of DC, but not actually in the centre - does anyone know of any - I'll be in Ottawa next week and DC the week after and it would be good to have a few tunes over there
You don't need a car to get to the Wednesday Ri Ra session near D.C.
Jerry, are you looking for center-city sessions because you won't have a car? If that's the case, I'd like to recommend the Wednesday night session at Ri Ra Pub, in Bethesda, Maryland, just outside D.C. You can easily get there on the Metro (subway system). I did this myself a few weeks ago. Take the Red Line, which goes through the heart of the city, to Bethesda; it's just a few blocks from there. I'd suggest calling for detailed walking directions.
The session is 7 - 11 pm and the caliber of playing is exceptional (well, it was until I showed up).
"Nanny O'Brien's, Monday nights starting after nine until ?, in Washington."
I'm not sure that this is still going on. Nanny's was bought about a year and a half back, and it has changed in many ways. For the worse if you ask me. New staff, higher prices, and if I'm not mistaken, none of the original regular performers. Not sure about the session... Sad to see what has become of what was once a DC institution. Last time I was there it was overrun by yuppies.
Many thanks folks - I'll definitely make at least one of the Ottawa sessions - as for DC I'll be flying out Wednesday morning so I guess that one's out - pity about the Nanny O'Brien's one - any others Sat-Tues?
Mc Ginty's Silver Spring - I played with Brendan Mulvihill last summer and some other great trad musicians. They have a website and good beer. Its also on the metro system.
Glad to hear you had a good experience at Nanny's--you hit it on a good night, I think! Hope you had some fun at our session at McGinty's, too. It was good to meet you, and nice tunes! What's the story behind the fiddle?

Pub web site at http://www.rira.com/bethesda/home.html
Send me a private message if you would like me to put you in touch with the session leaders.
Nanny O'Brien's, mentioned above, isn't exactly in the center city but it is also on the Red Line (Cleveland Park stop). www.irishusa.com/nannys/

The Monday Nanny's session is still happening. I can put you in touch with someone who plays there regularly (and is not a yuppie).
