I downloaded abc files from Norbeck's collection but my MacBook tells me there is no application to open the ".abc" files. Can someone tell me how to get see them?
Thanks
You can either choose Use program from the list and choose the editor to watch the plain text, then copy the tune you want to the converter of concertina.net, or you can download the abc-navigator or a similar program where you can import the .abc-files as they are.
sorry, didn't read the macbook. but the process remains the same, either you try to open it like a normal plain-text-file and copy-paste it to concertina.net or you find a abc-software that can import the files, i'm afraid the navigator doesn't run on a macbook though.
Go to the 'Links' page, click on the 'Categories' tab and a very top of the page (the list being alphabetical) you'll find 'ABC software'. That will take you to a list of ABC programs to choose from.
Barfly is the way to go on Mac. It's shareware, but will still function even if you don't pay for it (I recommend paying, of course).
It will open ABC files, display tunes as sheet music, and has arguably the best midi player I've seen for this stuff. It uses "stress programming", and will swing the rhythms a bit when it's playing (If you're a real geek, you can configure the amount of swing). Combine that with the concertina sound font that you can grab from the site, and it sounds pretty darn reasonable. (It doesn't sound like a human being, for sure, but at least it doesn't grate on the nerves the way most midi players do)

Re: need help with norbeck
Thanks for all the great ideas! Dragging on to TextEdit worked (as did changing the .abc to .txt), and I will download Barfly and experiment with it.
