Paragon de-luxe tenor banjo - the prodigal returns .....

Paragon de-luxe tenor banjo - the prodigal returns .....

as was accurately predicted in the last thread on this subject, the price achieved by that particular Paragon De-luxe tenor banjo has produced the "missing" 4th example!

given that a working musician would have had to do a 100 gigs at half a guinea each (according to what my grandpa used to say, not a bad fee for a job in the inter-war years) to afford that banjo when new, the price wasn't actually that unreasonable ....... if a bit shocking to those used to the very low prices that obtain for most vintage instruments at the moment ..........

does anyone know if that banjo went to an "Irish" player - or did it disappear into a collection, seldom (or never) to be played again?

Where is the 4th PE deluxe? Did the said banjo get the asking price of 10k ? I saw the link to ebay... but I think sale was withdrawn?

I'm curious too...who's got it and where? is it for sale I wonder?
Given a rate of 100 gigs to pay for the instrument when made in the '30's it's not so far off in terms of 'pay' for a gig today, at least for me that is.
So what, I'm wondering, has changed? maybe not much. Still can't afford the thing, damn and blast it; not at £10k a pop if that's the going rate.

Re: Paragon de-luxe tenor banjo - the prodigal returns .....

regarding my previous post I should point out that I only occasionally 'gig' - at the rate given it would take me well over ten years to gross £10k by which time....

Re: Paragon de-luxe tenor banjo - the prodigal returns .....

best info I can get is that the example offered on Ebay was sold at a negotiated price pretty close to the asking price of £10K. details of the actual buyer were not disclosed - but it could have been a "Session" user .........

with the going rate for standard well-played Paragon tenors at around £2K for a scruffy one to £3K for a pretty one (compared to an original price of 28 guineas or 56 gigs), £10K may look a lot of money - but for an immaculate "de-luxe" example with history & pedigree, it's not outrageous.

a well-played example (like the 4th tenor) won't fetch that sort of money - but would make a bit more than half (say £5K - £6K), I'd think - simply because it's so rare & nice

time will tell when I've finished refurbishing it and have it ready for sale ...............................
