New sounds website

New sounds website

Friends of mine are involved with setting up a new website, Sound Lantern, http://www.soundlantern.com/Index.do which may be of interest to some of you here, the idea is that it’s like youtube, but for sounds, rather than videos. It’s in the early stages at the moment, but more features should be added soon, including an option to charge people to download your sounds if you want, (at the moment everything is free) Theres's not much trad stuff there at the moment, but maybe some of you will join up and change that!

Re: New sounds website

It's odd that there's not much diddley music on it ... as the design has leprechauns running all over it

Re: New sounds website

This is what we've been waiting for all this time - the audio equivalent of YouTube. Now it's up to us.

Re: New sounds website

I registered on the site (so I could leave Jim some feedback for his fiddle tunes) but I have yet to receive an activation/confirmation email. Anyone else manage a successful sign-up?

Re: New sounds website

Mairtin,
try emailing them by the contact section to say this has happened, hopefully they'll sort it out. They want feedback anyway about any glitches, as it's a new website, but they are gradually sorting it.

Jim,
good to see you've joined.

Re: New sounds website

llig leachim,
I know there's a lot of green colouring on the site, but I can't actually see any leprechauns. Have you had your eyes tested lately?

Re: New sounds website

Did you not know that that's the thing about leprechauns? You can't see them.

Re: New sounds website

Ha, ha, how do you know, if you've never seen one ? :-)

Re: New sounds website

BTW, the site crashes my (firefox) browser, so I can't see anything, not even the leprechauns.

Re: New sounds website

I joined Sound Lantern yesterday. The activation/confirmation email arrived almost immediately and was dealt with. I'm using my "lazyhound" name. BTW, it seems that only those members who have uploaded sound files actually appear on the "channels" list.

Wolfbird, which version of Firefox are you using? That might be relevant if you get crashes. Perhaps the leprechauns are doing it.

My main browser is Opera 9.51 (a beta, but the official current version is 9.25), which gives me no problems at all and is quicker than Firefox or IE.

Mairtin, Wolfbird, or anyone else who has problems using Sound Lantern website, email basil@soundlantern.com

Re: New sounds website

Visiting with firefox 2.0.0.5 worked fine for me. The faerie-finder plugin 3.01beta flashed for a while then reported it was filtering 3 clurichauns and a map to buried treasure before it crashed on me.

Re: New sounds website

It took me 3 attempts to get to receive anactivation/confirmation email. But I managed it I think-

Re: New sounds website

Hi everyone, very nice to meet you!
Just letting you know that we are working on fixing the "confirmation mail issue" that some users are facing when trying to signign up.
If you find something that is not working correctly on Sound Lantern please report it to admin so we can fix it! :)
We have lots of new features in the works, we just have to do them one at a time, but they are coming! :)
Please let your friends & family know about SL, we need to get the word out!
Again, nice meeting you all!
Regards,
Basil

Re: New sounds website

I've just uploaded my first recording. No, it's not Irish, it's an experimental and somewhat crude multi-track recording I made on my cello back in 1971, using a multi-track reel-to-reel tape recorder (can you still get them?), of a Bach 4-part chorale. It took me ages to get the sync of the 4-part harmony anything like close, so when I'd finished I decided (even in 1971) that life was too short to repeat the experiment ... :-)

Re: New sounds website

I've just uploaded a couple of tracks from my CD 'Draíocht' including the already infamous song 'Ducks'.

Hope you enjoy.......

p.s. the website is a great idea but I can already see lots of copyright infringement going on!!!

Re: New sounds website

Frisbee, I agree. Copyright on an audio website like SL has to be the responsibility of the uploader; it's quite impracticable for the website itself to monitor each and every submission.

If a third party draws SL's attention to an upload that apparently infringes copyright or other legal rights then SL would presumably be able to withdraw that upload until the situation is resolved, and in an extreme case perhaps to cancel the uploader's membership.

I believe YouTube operates in this manner, and also have the resources to detect infringing videos (which they are apparently required to do so under recent US legislation). YouTube also monitors uploaded videos for inappropriate content.

However, detecting infringing videos is inherently an easier proposition than trying to do the same with audio. Imagine trying to identify an upload that is in fact a copy of a1960's EMI pressing of a Beethoven piano sonata, if the pianist and the label are not identified on the uploaded file.
