Sorcha Curtin

Sorcha Curtin

A few weeks ago there was a lively discussion here after Clare FM played a track by young Miltown Malbay concertina player Sorcha Curtin from a compilation CD.

For the next several hours, there's another chance to hear her, recorded live at the Blonde's by Clare FM. She plays The Job of Journeywork and The Ewe Reel near the beginning of Joan Hanrahan's show from Monday, March 24. The show starts with a few tracks from Paddy O'Donoghue's new CD before going to the live recordings from The Blonde's, so it's maybe 15-20 minutes into the show. This will probably be replaced in the archives by today's show (March 31) by tomorrow, so if you want to hear it, act fast.

Re: Sorcha Curtin

I was the cause of the lively discussion, mea culpa, my choice of words was somewhat unfortunate, triggered by my reaction to the post I was responding to.
She's a lovely (quite young) player, simple and steady.

On the same show, there's a rare chance to hear Edel Fox's mother singing. Now I'm regretting having missed the first part of this recording, broadcast on the 17th, and in the archives until last week.

Re: Sorcha Curtin

i caught up with joan's show last wednesday or thursday and was delighted to hear more from this player! i think this example is even lovelier than the prior one, which i liked much. also, there are two other concertina offerings on that show, though i got confused as to whether they were both by the same young women or by two different players. in any case, it was more lovely stuff.

Re: Sorcha Curtin

Regrettably I missed both Clare FM broadcasts from this vintage Miltown Malbay session in the Blondes. Anyway I did manage to get Michael Mahony's CD which includes many of the musicians who took part. For anyone who recorded the show and may have trouble identifying the participants, this blog from the Comhaltas website may be of some assistance:-

“The Blonde’s” session (Miltown Malbay)celebrated its Silver Jubilee in style on Thursday night 28th February, when a marathon session was recorded by Clare FM for broadcast on Joan Hanrahan’s programme, Coisle an Cheoil on Monday March 17th. A teenage group of musicians from Craobh Laichtin Naofa CCE session gave a brilliant performance, as a group and as individual performers . This was followed by what can only be described as a vintage Blonde’s session, from the likes of Michael Falsey, Michael Mahoney, Pete Haugh, Pat Curtin. Pat Reddan, Jesse McNamara, Tony O’Loughlin. Frankie McNamara, Tom O’Sullivan,Frank Whelan, Murt Collins, Tony Slattery, Bridie Cleary. Peadar Cleary, Peter Cleary, Joe O’Connor, Claire Commane, Noreen Murrihy, Marie Healy, Andrew Newland, Martin Vaughan (Former Tulla Ceili Band vocalist) Lorna Maxwell, Michael Burke and many more. Michael Mahony, who with Pete Haugh set up the session in 1983, thanked Joan Hanrahan and Pat Costello for recording the session. He also complimented all who have made The Blonde’s session such a success over the years. Joe O’Connor paid tribute to Bridie and Peter Cleary and their family for their hospitality and the warmth of their welcome for performers and visitors over many years. He also recalled with some nostalgia the welcome which was accorded to all when Bridie Cleary’s late father Jack Mahony was proprietor. The session in “The Blonde’s” Miltown Malbay continues every Thursday night as it has done for the past 25 years.
