I thought that it was disgusting. While i am a fan of the crash ensemble in their own field, i am certainly not impressed with their arrangement in this circumstance. They added nothing musically to the singing. Why do musicians think that they can arrive at irish traditional music and presume to elavate beautiful melodies without ever trying to fully understand or appreciate what their dealing with. Iarla has a nice voice but sadly i get the impression that he hasn't got the confidence in his voice and more importantly the tradition which gives him such airs and songs of undoubted beauty.
Very weird performance and I felt they didn't complement Iarla's singing. I like his Afro Celt stuff though. Indeed, the very name ensemble does not sit comfortably with the tradition. I know Iarla is a fine sean nós singer but I didn't enjoy the performance at all. It was too long& boring too. I don't think we witnessed Riverdance2 being born that night!.. indeed I felt the whole Gradam was far too left of centre for my liking and I fear it is losing sight of it roots and raison d'etre. Ml
I liked it , though a few oul fellas sitting beside me at the concert hadn't a clue what was going on. It was very different and I think Iarla .did a great job holding it all together. I like where different genres interact
The Crash Ensemble at the Gradam
The Crash Ensemble at the Gradam
Just wondering what people on this site think of the Crash Ensemble's perfonmance with Iarla Ó L at the Gradam?

I thought the combination of Iarla and the ensemble was brilliant. Love the cello part in particular.

didn't like it at all. a clarinet or something kept coming in to the melody and it didn't sound very nice at all

Re: The Crash Ensemble at the Gradam
Iarla on his own bad enough, with the Crash Ensemble unbearable. Had to flip!
