When one also takes into account all the various sessions throughout the festival 'c' in hostelries such as the Blondes on the Lahinch Road and many other similar establishments, then this is definitely a week that musicians should try and pencil into their diaries.
'And I suspect, as in days of old, sessions and dances outside the usual venues too..'
Unfortunately things seem to have been changing over the past five or so years, there's actually less nice music in town during the day and at night the good music leaves town altogether (in combination with a crowd of students that seem more focussed on going to all ceilis and concerts, leaving the street to the drinkers). That doesn't mean there isn't still a lot to enjoy but compared to 'the old days' you will have to make a deliberate effort to find really nice music.
And before anyone comments: I haven't missed one since 1980.
