I just have one of each instrument and it's worked fine. I tried playing a five string viola once, and it was very weird/disconcerting. I don't know that it would make much of a difference in teaching, but the mechanics of actually playing one are a bit different than either violin or viola.

I am curious as to how many of you teachers who teach both violin and viola have found that a 5 string, violin or viola, is effective to teach both??
