Compass records is having their annual St. Patrick's Day sale and I want to add some more fiddle CDs to my collection. Who are some good fiddlers I should look into getting some of their CDs? Thanks!
Here is the link to their sale: http://compassrecords.com/catalog/
Hi Sara - here's a link to a very useful page to help you choose - http://www.irishfiddle.com/index_of_fiddlers.html (there are quite a few MP3 samples)
I bought Tommy Peoples cds recently and Brian Conway's First Through the Gate - both excellent but contrasting styles
A few of my favorites:
Brendan Mulvihill - The Flax in Bloom, The Morning Dew (with Donna Long) also with "The Irish Tradition".
Brian Conway and Tony Demarco - The Apple in Winter
Martin Hayes
Oisín Mac Diarmada
I've just heard that the North of Maine got 10 feet of snow... A friend sent his picture with him in the shot after a bit of shovelling... Looks like work, but it looks like fun too. I'll take 10 feet of snow over damp English chill anyday... Here's hoping you got the wood in for the winter and have a nice fire to warm yourself up with...and music too...
Yes, Maine has received A LOT of snow this year, especially up in the county (that would be Aroostook county, Maine's most northern and largest county). It's been many years since we've this much snow. Makes me want to go play The Snowy Path.

Re: Fiddle CDs
A few favourites -
Kathleen Collins - Traditional Music of Ireland - very soulful music, clear phrasing and a lovely tone
Martin Byrnes with Reg Hall - fiery and intense
Andy McGann and Paul Brady - majestic, and subtle, the dogs crap
Paddy Canny - Traditional Music from the Legendary East Clare Fiddle Player - almost jazzy, you can hear the influence on Martin Hayes

Re: Fiddle CDs
Funny, I can't see anything on the Compass Records site about a sale.
Also, all the specific links given above return the message '403 forbidden'.

Re: Fiddle CDs
Dozens of trad music lovers flocked to the site at the same time and overloaded their server!

The late, great John Gordon from my hometown, nobody was ever a better fiddle player or a more modest human being. THAT IS A FACT.
