I'm having some problems with the database: having just received the new Hayes Cahill recording 'welcome here again' I located it on the 'Recordings' database and began to look out the sheet music for some of the great tunes I want to learn. However - I clicked on track 1: The Clare Reel and was taken to Gallagher's Frolic - a jig! I then tried track 2: The High Jig and was taken to The High - a reel! I gave track 16: Coleman's March a try, and was sure enough taken to a Coleman's March, but clearly not the one on this CD (unless my ear is completely deceiving me)... Has anyone run a check on this, and can anyone help with these three tunes? (I know - I should really be learning them all by ear! Sorry) Many thanks
As far as I can tell, tunes are linked based on name. Keep in mind that tunes in the database can have multiple names, and that multiple tunes can be listed with the same name.
So when you follow a link from a recording to a tune, you are going to get some tune which has the specified name as one of its names in the database. But alas, there is no guarantee that it is the actual tune you want...
I looked up Gallager's Frolic, and I see that it is also known as the Clare Reel. So this is an example of one tune having multiple names.
In the case of the High, this is an example of multiple tunes with the same name.
This is a bit inconvenient, but you can always do a search on the name you want and probably the tune you really want will be among the results.
Use the search feature, enter the title, "Clare", and then from the drop down menu the tune type, in this case 'reel'. As you've discovered, the links from recordings can be problematic, especially if there are several tunes called 'Clare', and with the system not disitinguishing tune type...
bear in mind also that the chances of the tune in the database 9even when you locate the right tune) being the same notes as the tune on the record are virtually zero
And, if you can read ABCs, you could do a little 'adjustment' to the ABCs you've found to meet what your ears are hearing from your source before submitting it too be converted to dots... If it is different enough, for the enjoyment of those who come after you, you could also add it to the 'comments' for that tune, for someone else to find in the future...
Thanks to all. I guessed it what some sort of automatic link to the database. And thank you TheMuse for the link to The High (Jig). Otherwise I've searched throughout and can't find a version of The Clare Reel which is at all like the Hayes / Cahill recording, nor the Coleman's March... So I've got to knuckle down and learn them in the good old way!
Have fun learning those tunes.
I do apologize for the faulty link on 'The Clare Reel'.
Rather than throw out the 'data-base' I would like to encourage those who post Abc's to do their best. Also, there are many good 'comments' amongst the tunes. Even with a good pair of ears it is a nice niche to have on TheSession.
Cheers

Re: Wrong tunes??
Sometimes you'll find something more to your needs in the comments. You can then always cut and paste it into the tun-o-tron at concertina dot net...

Re: Wrong tunes??
And if your ears are that good, why bother with the version in the data base in the first place?
