I was wondering how reliable the spelling and everything is for these. I am thinking about getting a tattoo with tune types so I want to be really sure of everything.
I was also wondering if anyone could type some pronunciations so I could actually say them.
Any reputable tattoo parlo(u)r will have an electronic spell-checker attached to the needle. Just remember to ask them to specify the Gaelic dictionary. The posh ones will offer you headphones on which you can listen to your tattoo being pronounced in real time. You may even get a control panel from which you can select the regional dialect you prefer.
PS The discussion you cited has a link to a website where you can hear pronunciations, though I haven't checked to see if it's still working.

A friend of mine is thinking of changing their surname to the full-on Gaelic spelling, but doesn't speak or understand the language. Seems like a recipe for embarrassment when folks speak to you in Irish and you have to admit, "Actually I don't..."
I was in Ireland a few years back and wore a shirt from a California-based Irish music band, the Fenians. Their shirt is supposed to say, "Have Fun or Get Out" in Gaelic but none of the B&Bs we visited were ever able to decipher it. I would've felt a lot worse if it had been tatooed somewhere on my epidermis.

When I first joined this forum some 4 or more years ago, it was awesome. I would ask questions and within an hour or so, I would have a ton of great helpful answers. Now, rarely do I get something that helps me...

Will probably has them right, but if it were me, I'd consult a dictionary rather than asking 42,000 strangers (some stranger than others) whose spelling abilities in various languages vary widely.

Agree slightly about the "if you don't speak the language..."
But if it's in your heritage, then I don't see a big problem.

Yes but they can mark an occasion or time or feeling
They can be beautiful!
They shouldn't blur if you get a competent artist and look after them properly...
...and they can also be recoloured every few years.

AJ, do you want the plural or singular spelling of each word?
For example, port is jig, poirt is jigs; ril is reel, rileanna is reels.
You'd do well to look at a copy of one of Breathnach's tune collections, where he uses Irish words for the types of tunes.

Ríleanna = reels
Poirt = jigs
Cornphoípaí = hornpipes
Polcaí = polkas
There are separate words for single, double, and slip jigs as well.
