I've been trying to help a friend install Jim Vint's abc2win on his new laptop which runs Wndows Vista. I've always found it very useful.
When it starts an error message appears suggesting we delete a file, abc2win.ini so the program can re-create it. This doesn't work and the program will not draw any tunes.
If you cannot get it to work try to reinstall completely.
Be sure you have the registration code so you can print tunes. Remove the old copy completely & download a new copy. You can use the same registration code. I get that error too on Windows XP.
BTW there are many more Abc programs since Abc2Win. I use AbEdit.
Cheers!
I believe you can right-click on an executable and change some settings to run it in Win95/98/2000 compatibility mode. abc2win is very old, so you might need to go back as far as 98.
jig, I believe you are linking to Bernard Parkin's Mid2Abc application.
It does not 'draw' the tune.
It does play abc files, imports & saves .midi fies, & transposes keys.
Yes, it's nice to see a local website cited, but not one which boldly states that it is being 'constantly updated' and actually hasn't been since 29/10/2004. How on earth can the programme contained there be suitable for Vista, jig?
Hence the question mark, and question; is abc2win vista compatible? because it doesn't sound so...
As mc states it is maybe possible to run it in compatibility mode . I still use xp thanks.... my hardware and numerous software all works fine
Sorry Mac Cruikeen the site WAS constantly updated until I lost the facility to access my site but never mind eh!.
I have no intention of ever downgrading my OS to Vista, so my program is unlikely to be modified (if it needs to be).
The program was written for my own use but I decided to share it with like minded people who might find it useful. In order to print the dots I save the ABC as a midi file, load it into Mozart and print it from there. You could do something similar.
Why on earth would anyone want to install an OS that slows down your pc (even for free)? Vista only offers eye candy over xp and slows down your pc to a crawl if you try and do any serious work. Personally I will stick with win2k as long as I can and then move on to Linux. By the way KML that page was flagged as malicious and my spyware prog denied me access.
I agree it slows down your PC - if you have a coal-fired one. Since this whole thread relates to Vista, I viewed my previous post as a small contribution for those interested. BTW, I had no problems accessing that page and it didn't destroy my pc as you can tell since here I am.
you could be on another PC !or sitting there smug behind a Mac.
But fair enough, if Vista works for you...but an operating system that uses 512mb of memory just to start up ! no thanks. ..
