Am not sure if this is the appropriate forum for this query, but am on the search for other schools in Australia that teach Irtrad or contemporary versions of Irtrad in ensembles. In particular, I have a faint recollection that there was a Geelong school that was a part of the National Celtic Festival but my past program search has been fruitless. Does anyone have any suggestions or anything to contribute to this discussion?
There is a girl fiddler on this site ,,from australia
Clear_drops ? shes from Alice springs,,
She may know of =Irish Music in Australian Schools
or something..
jim,,,
Shhhhhhhh! What would I know Jim? A few kool Gangsta kids once sat patiently listening to my scraping a jig along with one of their original Garage Band rap tracks, the whole minute of it, then happily went on writing and recording original rap stuff on me laptop. That's as close as I've ever got and I don't know what I can say, except that I have already sent b2jay a suggestion as to where he/she might look (but what would I know again, hey).. It might be as well to look outside Australia too for Irtrad ensemble stuff. I am sure there are those here who would have had experience of it in a more global context. How do I do that goofy emoticon again? Good luck b2jay, it sounds a great undertaking and I wish you all the best with it.
~ So, why can't you share your suggestions with the rest of us? You weren't being rude again were you? Don't worry, Jeremy's little filter will change it to something daft.. Who luvs yuh Milky Drops...
There was a brilliant ITM massed violin ensemble at the National Folk Festival a couple of years back...check the program (not the National Celtic Festival if there is such, I have not heard of it). If not in the program, just ring the National Folk Festival, they will know. It would be from Vic (where Geelong is), NSW Sydney isn't in to that sort of thing, they'd be at the pub mostly playin the tunes.
The National Folk Festival is holding a National Celtic Fiddle Rally as part of it's 2008 program.
If if follows past years formats (of Scottish Fiddle Orchestra's , Australian Bush Orchestra's, etc)....then anyone with a fiddle is invited to attend 3 or 4 rehearsals/lessons over the course of the festival....and then on the last day of the festival...the group performs. Sometimes the numbers get up there.
The Celtic Fiddle Rally sounds cool. There is the National Celtic - it's at Portarlington in Victoria (just out of Geelong) as opposed to the Nash/National at Canberra. Portarlington is on the long weekend in June. Thanks for your help DD, but I think what I meant was schools who have an irish music ensemble in their curriculum (ie. time set aside purposefully to rehearse irish music)
Not strictly what you were asking for b2, but there's a new festival starting at the same time as the National, in Grafton. It's called 'From Source To Mouth' and will be preceded by three days of masterclasses on Australian Folk Music (which will be at least 60% Irish by birth, I reckon).
I know the guys who are involved and they're all top musicians. I'm hoping to take the week off ang get along to all of it. The Nash will just have to wait another year.
I know people who teach scottish tune arrangements within the schools of Brisvegas. Unfortunately i've heard of no irish. There is also the brisbane celtic fiddle club: www.brisbanecelticfiddleclub.googlepages.org. If you want to contact me via the email in my profile... i'd be more than happy to pass on some contacts for you.
My brain was tired yesterday and I totally forgot about this...
There is a lady (Virginia Johnston) who teaches trad irish arrangements down near Byron Bay at Kadina High School. The kids perform at a dance concert i'm involved with in Lismore once a year and they do a VERY decent job.

It was a school kids ensemble, I'm sure, the one from that Nash a few years ago.

Re: Irish Music in Australian Schools
You're not thinking of the Melbourne Scottish Fiddle Club perhaps? There are plenty of young people involved with that.
And Duijera, b2jay is quite sure there is such a thing as the National Celtic festival, she played there last year!

Hey again.

You can probably contact her at the school:
http://www.kadina-h.schools.nsw.edu.au/Main/index.htm
Or contact me and i'll give you her number.
