Think I'd have a chance?

Think I'd have a chance?

On the 19th of February, I'll be seeing the Chieftains (finally!!!) at Bass Hall in Fort Worth, and I'm hoping to find some way of meeting them, or at least Molloy and/or Moloney. Has anybody else been to one of their concerts, especially at Bass Hall, and met them? If so, what's a good way to find them?

Re: Think I'd have a chance?

Look for the artist`s entrance and just wait. They have to come out eventually, and i`ve met many artists like this.
good luck

Re: Think I'd have a chance?

Your aiming too low :-) The last 2 times the Chieftains were here in London Ontario, they invited local musicians to play a set on the stage with them. 4 of my friends have done this.
they are very approachable and gracious.

Re: Think I'd have a chance?

Yea, wait by the door, tell them you play ITM and how much you admire them... they'll invite you to play without a mic while they play the encore. Then later you can put in your bio that you "played with the Chieftains."

Re: Think I'd have a chance?

I agree with hohnerowner. Go backstage if you can, tell them you're a musician as well as a fan, and introduce yourself. Ask if they have any plans to go anywhere afterward for some tunes. This has worked for me and others, and it's a great way to meet them (or any other musician, for that matter). It helps that you're young :) They're all very nice and would probably love to meet you and/or hear you play, granted that you go at an appropriate time, such as intermission or after the show.

Or if you can't get backstage, go to the nearest pub or bar that has or that's likely to have traditional music, and see if they show up. This tends to work better in cities where there's lots of music and musicians, obviously. Don't know if that's the case in Texas. The few times they've been in my area, the band has stopped by our small local session afterward (it just happens to be the same night of the week as the concerts have been) They've never joined in, but they've listened attentively (even better?!)

Anyway, good luck, but don't be too disappointed if it doesn't work out. It's great that you get to see them at least. They put on a great show. I've seen them several times in concert, and it's never been anything close to the same show twice. Have fun!

Re: Think I'd have a chance?

Woah, playing with them, seriously?! That would be amazing, though, I get nervous in front of 20 people... playing with the Chieftains and in front of a few thousand people... I think my heart would explode... I'm hoping I can at least meet them though... I'm up in the Mezzanine (not quite to the "nose-bleed" seats, but getting there...), so I'll have to be quick to get down to see them. I guess I'll come prepared with a whistle or two then....

Re: Think I'd have a chance?

Take them out to a rave/club afterwards. They'd love that.

Re: Think I'd have a chance?

Paddy Moloney once stalked me :-) Joking aside , just go up and introduce yourself, shake their hands, they're unlike other bands .......they don't have super egos :-) and Matt Molloy is one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. So is Sean Keane, pity Derek Bell wasn't alive , he was a gem and a genuine, honest guy.......he shot from the hip....may he rest in peace.

Re: Think I'd have a chance?

In chicago they had some local kids on stage playing in. I think there parents must have donated copious amounts of cash to the local Public TV Station on a regular basis to gain the honor.
SAdly last year, their Chicago gig was snowed out. They got trapped somewhere in Iowa and skipped Chicago for Madison Wisconsin.

Somehow passing up Chicago Orchestra Hall seems a bit strange. We'll see them in Chicago the first Sunday of March.

Re: Think I'd have a chance?

I always have to laugh when we Americans try to treat trad musicians like rock stars. I used to do it too... It's silly.

Re: Think I'd have a chance?

Hey Rev, it's even sillier to treat rock stars that way! ;-)

The Chieftains 6 CD in the bio says "we played with Bliss".

True, SWFL. And it's even *sillier* still to treat bliss that way! :-P

Sex and drugs and rock and roll.

Re: Think I'd have a chance?

Hmm, you think the people at Bass Hall would let me in with some of my instruments?... Even if I don't play with them at all, I'd like to at least Matt Molloy and maybe see if he could play one of my flutes, to see if he can get a decent sound out of them, because I sure can't...

Re: Think I'd have a chance?

"at least *meet* Matt Molloy" that should say
