London, 21st May - Plans for a special session - please join us

London, 21st May - Plans for a special session - please join us

Our local pub - The Duke Of Edinburgh, Lee High Road, SE12 - which hosts a small, low-key (and hence highly enjoyable!) Wednesday night session, was recently visited by the local council's "entertainment police", as a result of which the landlord has just forked out a considerable sum in order to continue running sessions! (He didn't have to ... most publicans would have simply cancelled the session, but thankfully Michael, the man in question is made of sterner stuff!)

His application is in its final stages and he'll soon "be legal". So, as a gesture of our thanks for his support, we're trying to get as many musicians as possible along to the regular Wednesday night session on Wednesday 21st May. There'll likely be the usual "For He's A Jolly Good Fellow" antics in addition to some belting tunes and hopefully allconcerned will have a great night out!

Kick-off 9.30ish.

Any London "thesession" regulars like to join us? You'd be made very welcome.

Quite a few of the regular posters to this site are regulars (or semi-regulars) at the Duke of Edinburgh session, so you may be able to put faces to familiar names!

BTW, Here's the link to it. This also inadvertently documents the recent history of the carry on at the pub:

Re: London, 21st May - Plans for a special session - please join us

Danny, Aidan, count me in. Can somebody remind me next week? I have a head like a sieve, and I've got the Weymouth folk festival this weekend to distract me.

See "youse" later

See you all there!

Paging Dave ...bigvioladave

Dave ...

Don't forget to invite Mick along. Your duet on "I Buried My Wife ..." last week was nothing short of mesmerising!

Re: London, 21st May - Plans for a special session - please join us

well,it's good of you to say so,Aidan, but i think the mesmeric bit comes from the quality of those great piping tunes themselves - there's a great version of that tune with Paddy Glackin and Robbie Hannan on the 'in full spate' album.
i will certainly try to get Mick alongon the 21st
best wishes

# Posted on May 11th 2003 by biggus dave

I Buried My Wife ...

Dave ...

You're no doubt right. That tune and, for example Garret Barry's and Copper and Brass and other jigs associated with the pipes have a similar haunting quality.

But a good tune is one thing and a good tune played well another!

Re: London, 21st May - Plans for a special session - please join us

Lee High Road... If I can get there from the other side of the Thames, surely Zina, Will et al. can cross a silly little pond to get there.

# Posted on May 13th 2003 by CreadurMawnOrganig

For those grammatical pedants amongst you, I've no idea why I put a dot after 'et al'.

# Posted on May 13th 2003 by CreadurMawnOrganig

Re: London, 21st May - Plans for a special session - please join us

Maybe because it's grammatically correct?

It is an abreviation of et alumni.

Con

# Posted on May 13th 2003 by Conán McDonnell

Et alumni?

And there's me thinking it was an abbreviation of "et alia" ...!

Just think of the pedantic crack we could have in between sets at the LEE HIGH ROAD ROCKING MEGASESSION ON 21st MAY!!!!!!

Re: London, 21st May - Plans for a special session - please join us

Actually I think you're right. "And others" or "and followers/pupils" are valid. Can't wait for this mad session. It would just have to be the week I'm teaching a particularly stuffy technical course for the first time. Might have to hit the OJ! By the way, is this the one with all the egg, castanet, marracas, djembe, dumbek etc. players? Shall I bring an air rifle?

Con

# Posted on May 13th 2003 by Conán McDonnell

Didn't mean to have the extra "j"!

Re: London, 21st May - Plans for a special session - please join us

Both wrong. Zina & Will et al the biscuits.

BTW, Jack, Bill & Steve from the Woodman are now aware of the imminent monster megasesh and said they'd be along.

# Posted on May 13th 2003 by Rudall the time

Egg and spoons et al

Don't worry, Con

# Posted on May 13th 2003 by Rudall the time

Re: London, 21st May - Plans for a special session - please join us

I never eat all the biscuits! I'm one of those infuriating people who doesn't want to look selfish and eat the last treat on the plate...

# Posted on May 13th 2003 by Zina Lee

P.S.

Will's molasses chewies, on the other hand...

Re: London, 21st May - Plans for a special session - please join us

Cor blimey guv! Did the grass get grassed up? Luvvin' it!!

Haven't heard the term cliper in yonks!

By the way, Zina,it's more rude to eat the second last biscuit, 'cos then you know you can't be called rude for eating the last one.

Con

# Posted on May 13th 2003 by Conán McDonnell

Re: London, 21st May - Plans for a special session - please join us

"Cliper"? Is someone going to translate, or is it too rude? *grin*

Oh god, Con

Re: London, 21st May - Plans for a special session - please join us

Holy God ...

A talented line-up or what!

We'll be spillin' out into the street at this rate!

Boyz, we're suckin' diesel now and no mistake!

# Posted on May 13th 2003 by Aidan Crossey

Re: London, 21st May - Plans for a special session - please join us

A "cliper" or just a "clipe"....this is, I believe a peculiarly Glasgow expression meaning a grass, or someone who tells on someone, and can also be used as a verb, both transitive and intransitive.
The diphthong "i" is pronounced in the uniquely Scottish and North of Ireland way like "iy", not Standard English "aiy"

Claro?

Danny.

Re: London, 21st May - Plans for a special session - please join us

Not to be confused with

# Posted on May 13th 2003 by Conán McDonnell

Re: London, 21st May - Plans for a special session - please join us

I could quite happily confuse our clipe with a glipe, being one and the same thing on this occasion!

# Posted on May 13th 2003 by Rudall the time

Re: London, 21st May - Plans for a special session - please join us

Is that like a snitch? Glipe, clipe! Nice, but however did those words come about, I wonder? Etymology, anyone? OED?

# Posted on May 13th 2003 by Zina Lee

Clipe

Mind you ... In Northern Ireland a clipe has two meanings.

The first a sharp, stinging blow witha fairly open hand - designed to shock rather than incapacitate as in ... "Ye wee gulpen ... if ye don't shift yer ass, I'll gi' ye such a clipe wi' the back of my hawn yer chicks'll be red-raw for a fortnight!"

The second a small portion of something ... usually handful-sized, as in "I don't know what the hell I just put my foot in, but I gave it a wipe wi' a big clipe of grass and it seems to have shifted the worse o' it!"

TONIGHT's THE NIGHT!

Hope to see a few new faces joining us for the hypersession at The Duke. Michael's tipped off to expect a bigger crowd than normal and - although he's not a man given to extremes of emotion (regulars will know what I mean!) - I think he's quite chuffed by the support we're giving him.

Celtic Match

What time will the match finish at? Will it mean we'll have a late kick-off? Also presumably it'll mean the pub will be pretty busy. Billy decked out in full green and white regalia I'd imagine....

Danny.

Time

Let's aim to be tuned up and ready to roll for 9.15 (if there's no extra time, etc. this should be OK).

Re: London, 21st May - Plans for a special session - please join us

Nah - 9.30, Aidan, they have a break after the first half (game starts at 7.45, I found out from some Sellick fans here at work). Might be wise getting in touch with Michael to ask him to reserve a table for musicians for after the match - just to put up a wee sign.

Re: London, 21st May - Plans for a special session - please join us

There's this cool high tech thing called a phone, boys... *snort* How funny is it that The Session has become the fastest way to communicate with somebody in your own city about a session in said city? Hee.

Re: London, 21st May - Plans for a special session - please join us

You gonna come along after all then Zina?

Yeah, I suppose Aidan and I could even use emails but I think it's fair enough to have this discussion "open" as other likely partipants may want to add their 2p worth, or see how things are panning out...let's hope it's not gonna be just me and Aidan turning up!!

Danny.

em... participants, not partipants

Re: London, 21st May - Plans for a special session - please join us

I wish! (Picture me filling the air with wistful profanity.) Instead, I think I shall go back to cleaning up the house, we're putting it on the market and our real estate agent is coming tonight to take measurements and stuff, and we want it to look extra nice so he'll think we can price it higher. Tuesday I installed a kitchen and bathroom floor, and we've been painting and decorating and cleaning til my fingers are too sore to play. *sigh*

London calling

Wait...that was Monday...God, I'm starting to lose track...I really am going to need a vacation after all this! With our luck, we'll get an offer right away and then we'll have to buy a place and move within the month. Talk about what a mixed blessing THAT would be....

Re: London, 21st May - Plans for a special session - please join us

Danny, any advice on how to get there? I've got the address but I'm a bit baffled as to the transport choices. (Coming from central London as I'll be heading over from work).
See you later!

Re: London, 21st May - Plans for a special session - please join us

Hi Helen,

2 main choices:

1._Train_ from either Charing X or London Bridge, to Lee. I think the line goes to Bexley, and Sidcup and all that lot, but get off at Lee. From Lee station, turn right then walk less than half a mile up towards Lee Green, where there is a crossroads, with 2 pubs, the Tiger's Head and the Old Tiger's Head. Turn left at that junction, walk maybe 100 yards along Lee High Road to the Duke.
Or you could get a train to Lewisham, then catch a local bus along Lee high Road to the Duke.
2._DLR_ to Lewisham, then do as above, get a local bus along Lee High Road to the Duke.
My web page gives details for the Woodman and the duke is just a few 100 yards further on:

Hope you can make it!

Danny.

Great Night

Thanks to everyone who turned up....maybe not the ultrahypermaximegasession it was billed to be, but I never expected that! Maself, bigdave, milesna, Aidan, Jack, Bill, Billy (for part of the time!) Cath, Conan, Ken, Dave (from Folkstone!), Helen, John (fiddle) Jeeeeermutt...oh, and (unfortunately) not forgetting .... the Shadow's shadow .... (apologies if I missed anyone) plus many Sellick fans bedecked in green. Sorry the 'Tick got beat, but at least the session was class. Hope yer all feeling spot-on today, and the North London delegation got back safely.

Danny.

Re: London, 21st May - Plans for a special session - please join us

Hi Danny
thanks, got back fine! Got a taxi in no time. Had a lovely evening, thanks for the invite, chaps. My first ever visit to Lewisham, or at least, that bit of it. Nice to put a few more faces to names as well - good to meet you, bigdave and Aidan. Which one was milesnagopaleen, then?

# Posted on May 22nd 2003 by Nell

Re: London, 21st May - Plans for a special session - please join us

Since miles is obviously still hungover, I'll pipe up on his behalf, but will not reveal his true identity without his given authority. He was the other flute player - very classy, but don't tell him I said that, we don't want him big-headed. He gave you a whistle tutorial toward the end of the evening, and was showing me some Johnny Carty reels.

Thanks

Thanks to all who came to Wednesday's bash.

Unfortunately, as far as I was concerned, I had a a very busy day at work on Wednesday with the prospect of a busier day looming on Thursday. And so I was more subdued than normal.

Our guests brought some great tunes and songs with them. I don't wish to embarrass anyone by praising them in public - nor do I want anyone else to feel left out by not having praise lavished (cos everyone's contribution was very welcome and much appreciated!) - but wasn't Helen's version of "I Am A Wee Weaver" a real gem!

It was a good oul' night, altogether. Here's hoping we can have a rendezvous with our visitors again when the time's right.

Go raibh m
