Tired of the increasing performance speed of newer ITM bands as they attempt to add something new to an already over exposed genrel I can't help but notice stats from not only my own website but others as well.
Good songs are getting more attention from the public, and it seems to me that we have gone round the circle ....again.
Of course the do. Anyone can relate to a song and almost anyone can open their gob and copy to a degree. Children learn to sing about the same time they learn to walk. They can't do that with an instrument. Doesn't change the fact that tunes are better
Tunes are not over-exposed, they are just under-appreciated by people who don't know any better. It's our job to educate those poor wretches, who don't know what what they're missing.
Michael Green had a nice take on the Traditional Irish Song:
"Oh the English came and murdered all me neighbours,
And then they came and murdered us as well..."
So little good contemporary music out there......No wonder music of any quality and tradition always comes back full circle.
My feeling is that there is nothing much new in music. The good stuff gets stolen, regorganized and reused. Even Bach, Beethoven and their contemporaries were accused of pilfereing each other's concepts....and traditional Irish tunes as well.......
lets hear your offering then SWFL, easy huh? do demonstrate, a fine melody that will stand the test of time too I hope. we can see if it enters the tradition in 20yrs or so......
Grego, boring lyrics? like ;
Lift MacCahir Og your face
Brooding o'er the old disgrace
That black FitzWilliam stormed your place,
Drove you to the Fern
Grey said victory was sure
Soon the firebrand he'd secure;
Until he met at Glenmalure
With Feach MacHugh O'Byrne.
Curse and swear Lord Kildare,
Feach will do what Feach will dare
Now FitzWilliam, have a care
Fallen is your star, low.
Up with halberd out with sword
On we'll go for by the lord
Feach MacHugh has given the word,
Follow me up to Carlow.
See the swords of Glen Imayle,
Flashing o'er the English pale
See all the children of the Gael,
Beneath O'Byrne's banners
Rooster of the fighting stock,
Would you let a Saxon cock
Crow out upon an Irish rock,
Fly up and teach him manners.
From Tassagart to Clonmore,
There flows a stream of Saxon gore
Oh, great is Rory Oge O'More,
At sending loons to Hades.
White is sick and Lane is fled,
Now for black FitzWilliam's head
We'll send it over, dripping red,
Toqueen Liza and her ladies.
I read an article recently, an interview with Oliver Sachs, the neurologist. He said that the part of the brain for singing and speaking are different and some people with brain injuries cannot talk but can still sing. I thought that was fascinating.
Songs getting 5 times as many hits as tunes !

Things go in "coicles" -- as my Uncle from New York City would have said.

I don't know if the gob-copying explains it, bogman. Lilting would be a lot more popular if that were the case. I think it's the lyrics.
Irish tune lyrics are pretty boring, other than the odd "oh cr@P!" and "shlt!" when the fluter forgets his way once in a while.

Re: Songs getting 5 times as many hits as tunes !
1. "Oh come all ye..." [lads, lassies, bold sportsmen, roving young blades, sailor boys, etc. etc.]
2. "...and hear my sad tale of..." [debauchery, loss, regret, tragedy, faithless love, betrayal, etc. etc.]
[insert several stanzas detailng #2]
3. "...so come all ye... [insert from #1] "...and take heed by my story..."
Has anyone made a random Irish folk song generator yet? Seems pretty easy.

Good point sbhikes. Interestingly many folk who have bad stutters can sing perfectly well.

This thread reminds me of the old joke -
D'ya know what an Irish Boomerang is? When you throw it doesn't return to you -
but it sings all these sad songs about how much it really wants to...

Re: Songs getting 5 times as many hits as tunes !
Nice one Jusa. And Jig, that song was written in 1560 or something, it is different now. The songs are more blood thirsty.
Of course there are many, many, many beautiful songs about the usual topics, love, hate, work, play, and the rest.
