I know, it has been discussed but... Stagi vs. Rochelle.

I know, it has been discussed but... Stagi vs. Rochelle.

So my gf and I are in Galway and have hit up some music stores. We strolled through one and saw a Stagi concertina. I have been wanting to buy a tina for for the lady for a while but my funds are pretty limited. One of my buddies told me to get a Rochelle. He said they were cheap and as good as it gets for cheap crappy accordions. ( Which is about where I stand.) I understand that I should get the best I can and that, unfortunately, is one that is no more than about 600$.

Anyway, we are in Ireland and found a Stagi that is tuned pretty well. I checked many of the notes to a tuner. And, it seems like the bellows are in good shape. The tina costs about 425 euro. This is more than a Rochelle but is it a better tina? It would be very cool to have her first tina from Ireland but that isn't enough of a factor to make me decide.

I have read many of the past discussions on the two machines. It seems split down the middle on what people think. One could tell what has gone wrong for each type but those faults don't always to happen. I am fully aware that in buying a tina of this quality I will invariably be buying two. I know I will need to buy the girl an upgrade but right now, this is what I can do.

I would greatly appreciate any advice on which one to chose. i don't know very much about tinas so any advice will be great.

Thanks!!

AJ

Maybe "the girl" should learn the difference and decide for herself? After all, she's going to be the one playing it.

I wouldn't let that sway you. Stagis are made in Italy.

go Rochelle. Don't know anyone who has regretted getting one.

Re: I know, it has been discussed but... Stagi vs. Rochelle.

We have been looking at them together. She has looked at and read all of the same info that I have. Both of us went to the music store and both of us played the tina. She is at a little more of a disadvantage than I being that she has never played any musical instrument in her life. I have been buying and playing instruments for quite some time. It does so happen that I have talked to some more people than her. If she wanted a certain one, that would be the one that we would get.

I am not letting the fact that it was bought in Ireland decide anything. It would be cool to have gotten her first machine from Ireland but obviously if the other one is better, and cheaper, I will buy that one. We don't have the ability to play a Rochelle, otherwise that would help the situation greatly.

Is an a tina that is half the price really better? Have any of you out there in session-land played both the boxes? I don't even know what a good one should feel like, play like....

I am leaning towards the Rochelle but it would be good to know what some people think...

AJ, you will find a lot of opinions on the Rochelle -- many from people who have actually played one :-) -- on the concertina.net forums mentioned above by Gzeg, http://www.concertina.net/forums/. I suspect that a forum search there will yield some explicit Rochelle-Stagi comparisons.

However: At the moment the usually-reliable forums are down and are producing an error message that I've never seen before. Let's hope this problem is short-lived.

I have seen a few players with Rochelle and they swear by them. remember that instruments are worse than jeans for "labels" and "Brand names". Are £120 levis that much better than £6 Tesco jeans. My own personal feeling is that the Tesco ones are more comfortable, and they are both made from denim. Instruments can be a bit like that as well.
