Music from Brittany

Music from Brittany

When I'm asked "do you like breton music" - my answer is "yes".
But I've realized recently that I, well, don't know too much of it.

Alann Stivell. Chieftains' breton CD. And a few local bands who play that sort of music here, in Moscow. And that's all.

Who else plays breton music? What bands, CDs, perfomers will you recommend? Alann Stivell is great, but I wish I could hear more.

Re: Music from Brittany

As an "add on" to mcdevincabe's comment, Kornog is one of the best bands I've ever heard. Well worth a listen!
Cheers

Also, if you haven't already, enter 'Breton Music' in the search for 'discussions' here...

Re: Music from Brittany

Keltia had a website, but for some reason the address isn't working? I hope that isn't a bad sign... :-/

Re: Music from Brittany

The harmonica and fiddle album "Harmonica, Violon" by Jean Sabot and Laors Dacquay is wonderful. Jean is the world's best-kept harmonica secret. Don't expect woolly, gobby tremolo playing here. The articulation is crisp, the playing is full of panache and the good taste is supreme.

Re: Music from Brittany

New Year's resolution, to learn a few as guitar tunes. My grandmother, though half Spanish was Breton, it was even her last name, Debora Breton so I kind of owe it to her. It was the 2007 resolution, and got as far as playing "The Breton Wedding March" with a friend playing flute. It starts very much like "here Comes The bride" .

Re: Music from Brittany

Jean Michel Veillon, Yann Dour, and Serge Liorzou are among the very best, as well as Christian Lemaitre, the fiddler.I would add Didier Squiban, the pianist. His album Porz Gwenn is phenomenal

Re: Music from Brittany

Pennou Skoulm is a good intro to Breton music. The band consists of the big names: Les Freres Molard, Jean-Michel Veillon etc.

The Chieftains put out a good album of Breton music, Celtic Wedding. The enlisted the help of Polig Monjarret who was the Breton equivalent of Brendan Breathnach.

For hard core Breton music, get a CD of sonneurs couples... biniou kozh and bombarde.

Re: Music from Brittany

Have to agree with pennhorse about Porz Gwenn - so strange to stumble across someone else who appreciates the brilliance of this album...

And Malcombpiper is right about the harcore (my favourite sonneurs couple is Jean Baron and Christian Anneix) but beware they might frighten you away as the extremely piercing and rich sound of these two instruments takes some getting used to...

Re: Music from Brittany

Pennou Skoulm, of course. (An interesting name for a band. Basically means D**k Heads)
And the bombarde is an acquired taste for a lot of us. Which reminds me that Breton music could use a few good concertina players. It's perfectly suited to the instrument.
As for Didier Squiban, mehitabel, I can only hope that his fame spreads far and and wide. He deserves it.

Re: Music from Brittany

pennhorse, how can a concertina be heard besides a bombarde?

Band to add, all not so strictly trad
Tri Yann
Gwendal
Kamtar
Taol Esa

Website in German, but great information:
