Trying to get a friend into this music

Trying to get a friend into this music

My friend, who has no experience of traditional music, asked me today:

"Hey Paddy, you have a lot of traditional music Cds, don't you?"
"Yes"
"Well could I have a lend of some because I'm starting to get into it ever since out visit to the archive place"

So I was delighted, even as random as it was. Can anyone recommend some bands or musicians for him that I could lend him. I don't think he'd quite understand the genius behind Finbarr Dwyer or John Carty musically so maybe some more 'universal' type players would be a better start. I was thinking of Lunasa and Martin Hayes etc but still amn't quite sure. Any ideas?

Re: Trying to get a friend into this music

How about Mary McNamara on concertina or Tony MacMahons retrospective CD. Martin Hayes as you say, very lyrical .. but maybe your friend would be more into the group sound?

Re: Trying to get a friend into this music

As for duet recordings, how about classics like "Molloy, Brady, Peoples" and Molloy and Keane's "Contentment is Wealth"?

Re: Trying to get a friend into this music

Danú are also very good in this respect; also Téada or the Border Collies.

Make your own greatest hits.

Re: Trying to get a friend into this music

Ah, but what do you mean by "traditional"?
Pardon?
Oh, sorry.

Re: Trying to get a friend into this music

Definitely Lunasa, Teada, Bohola. Kevin Crawford's albums are great too. I'm sure there's other great music out there I have yet to discover (I'm a bit new to this genre too, so I'll be checking this post for recommendations)

Re: Trying to get a friend into this music

Buy them the "Celtic Souls" boxed set- 10 CD's (for £8.72 inc. p&p- search on Amazon, then go to 'New & Used'> disctrade)-

This was flagged by ceolachan, slainte and others years ago, and though dubiously titled, is still a fantastic buy.

Individual CD's by John & James Kelly, Seamus Tansey, Finbarr Dwyer, Cherish The Ladies, and tracks by Sean McGuire, Joe Burke, Roger Sherlock, Brian Vallely etc.etc.- even the Armagh Pipers Club- who knows what might turn them on?

(No DO'D tracks among them, sadly, but, at that price you can't have everything.)

Re: Trying to get a friend into this music

Hey PaddyC, maybe I missed it, but what was the “archive place” you visited? Apparently it triggered your friend’s interest. Sounds like you think hard core trad might be too strong of a medicine just yet, though.

So where is your friend coming from in terms of musical taste? Top Pop, Classic Rock, Lite Jazz, Late Baroque, Black Metal? Is he a musician himself?

It’s got to be a great feeling to be there to witness when someone actually gets an inkling of the greatness of this music.

Oh and Arcady “Many Happy Returns” is a great introductory album, too.

Re: Trying to get a friend into this music

I don't know how I forgot to suggest Stockton's Wing!

Re: Trying to get a friend into this music

Rather than recommending individual bands or musicians an alternative suggestion would be to give your friend one of the better compilation albums on the market so that he can experience a broad range of music in one go.

I'd strongly recommend 'The Rough Guide to Irish Music (2nd edition)', released by World Music Network, or the new Nascente double CD 'Experience Ireland'.

Of course, this message is a blatant plug, but what the heck!

Re: Trying to get a friend into this music

The first edition is the one to have, Mac (accept no substitutes)- and has been my bedside reading for 2 years, now. Who was that guy again?- Geoffrey someone- quite a writer, anyway. Wonder what became of him...:)

Re: Trying to get a friend into this music

Make several mix CDs of the best tracks in your music library and have him tell you what he likes. Then give him the full albums.

Re: Trying to get a friend into this music

P-K, you're confusing the book 'The Rough Guide to Irish Music' with the World Music Network label's CDs of the same name, of which only the 2nd edition is now available - http://www.worldmusic.net.

Sadly, there'll never be a second edition of the book unless someone with more money than sense makes a direct offer.

Not sure what happened to 'Geoffrey' (I believe only his mother and his pet iguana Stanley are allowed to call him that), but I did hear a rumour that he was involved in a shakey-egg smuggling ring somewhere in Connaught).

Re: Trying to get a friend into this music

two great session cd's, Music at Matt Molloy's and Live at Mona's might set your friend on a 'do it yourself' path.

Re: Trying to get a friend into this music

Does your friend have access to the internet? Show him this. Not quite traditional but I do believe that is Matt Molloy on flute. ;>)

Re: Trying to get a friend into this music

Grand job, a compilation is the way to go but certainly Stockton's Wing, Planxty and "Molloy, Brady, Peoples" will get a fair share of tracks on it.

Re: Trying to get a friend into this music

sometimes trying to pick stuff that is "acceptable" backfires

My friends who were never into Irish music at all were converted on the spot by the pure pumping melodeon of Johnny Connolly

Re: Trying to get a friend into this music

but I'd second fidkid on Arcady's "Many Happy Returns" and the sheer exuberance of Ceili Bandits "Hangin at the Crossroads" will blow away any suspicions of tweeness

Re: Trying to get a friend into this music

He's already into it, and just trying to rationalize the accompanying insanity. And since we're all rubbing our hands eagerly together, chortling "heh heh heh", and plotting the course for his downfall... a quick "best of" homespun cd suggested by Kleelch and FidDLeO1 is the sure route to snaring another convert... heh, heh, heh...

Re: Trying to get a friend into this music

For a fiddler: Caoimhin o'Raghallaigh
For a piper: Brian MacNamara
For a concertina player: Migheal o'Raghallaigh
For an accordion player: Breanndan and Seamus Begley
For everyone: Star Above the Garter.

Re: Trying to get a friend into this music

Thanks, Mac, for putting me right- shall seek out the CD forthwith.
Is there a future in shakey egg smuggling, btw?- am always looking for growth areas in which to invest.

Stating the obvious, maybe, but Altan's 'Horse With A Heart' ?

It is Mr Molloy. One of those girls is pretending to play a bodhran, fair enough, but I think it is an Eamon Maguire drum. Such a waste.

Tell your friend to get Bothy Band or Altan for a session sound.
