A friend of mine gave me a mix CD with a bunch of Solas, Lunasa, some Silly Wizard and apparently some bluegrass stuff too but... one track I don't know who it is.... I remember him saying it was a Scottish fiddler, but i can't remember her name... it's a set of two reels, the first I think is in Bminor (or Edorian) and then Dmajor on the second phrase i think... and then the second tune is in Dmajor.... they're really beautiful tunes, but it drives me crazy not knowing what they are... anybody have an idea? the reels sound a bit like country music if that helps (especially the second phrases).... the second tune has some similarities to the first tunes second phrase too...
oh, and it's also a combination of a fiddle and a cello and possibly another fiddle.... im hearing a lot of that really percussive bowing you do i think somewhere really close to the frog
I have the Alistair Fraser(fiddle), Natalie Haas (cello) CD Fire&Grace - no 2 reel sets on there, but there's a more recent one out that I haven't heard yet - but the track list seems to suggest longer, single pieces rather than sets.
Does it go " Diddlee DE deedowdewowwadiddleya de dow dah ded ee wow de dowsey doodley diddley dooley de diddlee do de dah dee?" I think it mighr be Ned Flanders Reel or possibly it could be "Don't throw any more slack on the fire Granny , there's enough in your knickers already" which I think might be an old east Galway tune
definitely not whiskey in jar, though great song. Red Robin, that gives me no idea of the melody you're thinking of :(.... i'll try getting some abc to it, but it's been harder to do since the program i was using to slow tunes down and transcribe them easier was on a 30 day trial and its over now....
it starts out with just the percussive sound, and then the fiddle comes in slowly and starts off on the tune if that helps... im trying the ABC right now
Sorry Leiouekairna,I should have made clear,I was referring to the tune in Barn Owls head.I was hopeing to win a prize
Incidentally,I'd recommend anyone to listen to Natalie Haas's sister's CD,Brittany Haas plus Bruce Molsky and Darol Anger and other great musicians. Not ITM,but great fiddling,IMO.
This breed of thread really bugs the hell out of me. What a daft question ... "Good fiddle tune.. but what *is* it?"
The tune is the tune for fecks sake. You have a recording of IT. OK, a recording is only a snapshot, but basically, you have a recording of IT. So what's with the really really dim question of "what is it"? IT is what IT is. Duh.
You want its name? Fair enough, ask for its name. Not that that makes a difference to what IT is.
I am pretty sure that you are thinking of track 2 on Hanneke Cassel's CD "Silver." The tune names are listed as "The Glass Case of Emotion" and "Sweet Grandmother's Spatula" - both written by Cassel.
Good fiddle tune.. but what *is* it?

Re: Good fiddle tune.. but what *is* it?
Why don't you ask the person who gave you the track?

I can never get ahold of him, and probably won't for quite awhile

Re: Good fiddle tune.. but what *is* it?
It might be more helpful to put up some ABCs for the tunes for people to identify. Or try searching under the Tunes section on this site.

Have a look at the Fire and Grace listing here http://www.thesession.org/recordings/display/1223 many of the tunes have links to the database so you could see if any of the tunes are familiar.

You'd like the dots? Don't get me started.
