Looking for new music!!

Looking for new music!!

Hello!
I am a 16 year old boy from Norway that really likes Irish music. But there is one problem: In Norway they barely sell Irish music and that gives me the only choice to buy from the internet, but I don't know what to buy. So if I say I like Altan, Dervish, The Chieftains etc. what would you recommend??

# Posted on April 15th 2003 by tufbo

Re: Looking for new music!!

All the above. I bought a few Liz Carroll cd's recently which are brilliant. What else have i in my cd player?.......Cathal Hayden, Four men and a dog, Tommy People's, Planxty, North Cregg, Solas(don't buy "the hour before dawn"-it's crap, but their other cd's are great), Zoe Conway, Danu, Slide.
What are you into?

You should check this discussion:

...lots of good ideas for shopping list there. Couple of my new favourites are Beginish and NaConnery's.

Re: Looking for new music!!

Classic -- "Matt Molloy, Paul Brady, Tommy Peoples"

Clare music -- Mary MacNamara "Traditional Music from East Clare"

Pipe and Fiddle -- Davy Spillane & Kevin Glackin "Forgotten Days"

A Bit Modern -- Michael McGoldrick & John McSherry "At First Light": Niall & Cillian Vallely "Callan Bridge"

Young Scottish Band -- Deaf Shepherd "Ae Spark o Nature's Fire"

Scottish Pipe Music -- Fred Morrison "Sound of the Sun"

For some others, have a look at http://slainte.web.infoseek.co.jp/cd_en.html
That's my website but still unfinished, and you still can't find it through any search engine. I'm just waiting for the musicians and record labels to give the permission to use the cover images of the recordings.

Re: Looking for new music!!

I am a 45 year old boy from Italy that really likes Scandinavian music. But there is one problem: In Italy they barely sell Scandimavian music and that gives me the only choice to buy from the internet, but I don't know what to buy. So if I say I like Hans Brimi, Ale Moller, Frifot etc. what would you recommend??

# Posted on April 15th 2003 by gian marco

Re: Looking for new music!!

Gian Marco, visit at http://www.noside.com
A great resource of Scandinavian music, and you can also listen sound samples there. By the way, I'm from Finland and I play both Irish and Scandinavian trad. music.

At the time my (scand.) favourites are:

1.Väsen (instrumental) I like their older albums, such as spirit the most, for it contains more traditional material, and newer ones are more "world music".

2.Gjallarhorn (vocal) Magical music with haunting, medieval feeling in it.

Though this site is dedicated to the ITM, it feels good to see that someone is interested in "our" music as well.

Re: Looking for new music!!

Thanks jani. Actually I have many albums of scand. music.
My problem is that I can't find other musicians interested in it.
( in italy scand. trad. music is almost inknown )

Re: Looking for new music!!

You have to buy Lunasa! Deaf Shepard's second album is much better ("Synergy"). Mike McGoldrick's magic, try "Fused".

Happy Listening!

Re: Looking for new music!!

Dervish- brilliant irish band

Alasdair Fraser - (i know, i know, he's scottish....) but his music is amazing and contains loads of energy: i recommend his most recent album: Skyedance: Live in Spain.

Martin Hayes - he's a very powerful musician and has great trad tunes.

Ellery Kelin - good fiddler and has some nice tunes.

Patrick Street - they have some cool tunes, but i've heard better bands, but the musicians who make up the band are fabulous, which brings me to:

Kevin Burke - fabulous irish fiddler- lots of traditional tunes, esp. in Sweeney's Dream.

The Celtic Fiddle Festival - although not all irish music (contains scottish and music from brittany as well) this group is absolutly BRILLIANT and i highly recommend them to you. They have 3 cds, and my favorite is the first (i think) cd: The celtic fiddle festival.

hope this helps and good luck w/your search!!

p.s. i'm a 16 year old girl from california !

Re: Looking for new music!!

Thank you for the help guys ( and girls)!
I will try all you tips and see if I like them.
To Celtic 1234: I have all of Planxty's albums and one from Solas ( not the hour before dawn) and I think they are both brilliant!
Thanks everybody, I really appreciate your help!!

Re: Looking for new music!!

Tufbo, you have to look for a job to buy all of them.

Good luck!

Re: Looking for new music!!

It may take some time but I will try the tipses.
I can also see if I can find some sound clips on the internet and then buy it if I like it.

Re: Looking for new music!!

I would suggest you get your hands on good solo recordings of solid players. While Dervish, Liz Carroll, De Danudo etc etc are exciting & new - those recordings will probably only mess you up in the long run. If your playing flute

# Posted on April 16th 2003 by Mad Baloney

I would suggest Matt Molloy, Paddy Carty, Harry Bradley, Conal O'Grada, John Skelton, Seamus Tansey etc. Those supergroups are very entertaining but can mislead you. Especially in the begining.

# Posted on April 16th 2003 by Mad Baloney

Re: Looking for new music!!

Flook! Nomos! Solas, Planxty, Bothy Band .....

And Brad probably has a point about the solo flute stuff. HOWEVER, Liam Kelly of Dervish is the one who inspired me and set me on this long road (do be aware Dervish tune up a semitone if you're trying to play along)....

You might like Laurence Nugent as far as quasi-solo flute stuff goes. His "Irish Traditional Music on the Flue & Whistle" CD is pretty good to learn from and still fun to listen to.

Also, John Skelton (the fellow Brad mentioned) has a CD & tunebook called something like "A Few Tunes" which are about 40 (?I forget?) cool Irish flute & whistle tunes played unaccompanied at reasonable speed. He is a phenomenal player with great taste; you could do a lot worse than learn from him. I think the collection's about $20/$25 USD; email him at jlskelton@earthlink.net to see about having him send you one.

Re: Looking for new music!!

To Brad. What! Listening only to solo!
No defends, but that will never happen! I have Mary Bergin's feadóga stain 1 and even though she is the queen on whistle you get tired of listening after a while.
You need some other instruments too.
I have now listened to Lunasa and can tell you that IT WAS DELICIOUS!!!!

# Posted on April 16th 2003 by tufbo

Misleading BRAD

Hey Brad! What do you mean by "those supergroups can mislea you"? If you mean The Chieftains and The Bothy Band are one of this misleading groups I can tell you that they started the whole thing, if it wheren't for them Irish music wouldn't have been what it is today. So if they practicaly invented it (ok. I am overstating a bit here) how could they mislead me.
It is very entertaining, very good, very talented musicians, and absolutely not misleading.
How the hell can Irish music mislead me from Irish music if those who play it played it long before all other gruops even were born?
If someone would mislead, it would probably be Solas or something like that.
But I ashore you, I know The Chieftains have experimented a bit but no matter what you say IT IS NOT MISLEADING!!!!!!

Re: Looking for new music!!

I'm a 40-something wannabee boxist (really a flute player) who, apart from an addiction to Irish music, and who can furnish relevant readers with details of Swedish fiddle music from Dalarna by Kurbits - access it via:
http.//www.arcmusic.co.uk
, would like to know more about Italian L'Organetto Diatonico (2-row box) music, Particularly the playing of Maestros such as Roberto Tombesi, Riccardo Tesi, Beppe Greppi and Giuliano Cameli.
Any thoughts?

Danny.

Re: Looking for new music!!

Well no, I don't think I'm into Italian music.
But thanks for replying!!

# Posted on April 16th 2003 by tufbo

Re: Looking for new music!!

Tufbo, Irish music was around long before The Chieftains and The Bothies. Much as I love both groups (and many others, Liz Carroll is a particular hero of mine), it's important to listen to what came before to get a good solid basis of where Irish traditional music got the tradition part. Sure, it's valuable to listen to the good stuff from now, but even more valuable to listen to what's out there from before those groups. It's like learning slang before learning the nuts and bolts of a language, otherwise. Certainly, the groups from the 60's and 70's didn't invent this stuff. And yes, Brad is correct, it can be misleading in some aspects if you haven't a good basis in what came before.

The more you play, love, and educate yourself on this stuff, the less you need lush orchestration and fancy arrangements to enjoy it. Really.

Re: Looking for new music!!

I totally agree with Brad. I was one of the crazy fans of Lunasa, around two years ago but now I admire Mary MacNamara.

It's getting confusing, but it seems Tufbo is looking for the exciting traditional music. Then, you SHOULD try "Matt Molloy, Paul Brady, Tommy Peoples." That's the wild, traditional playing which many progressive bands of today are trying to but can't imitate. You can sample the recording at Amazon.com.

Re: Looking for new music!!

Zina and slainte have it.
This thread should be re-named "looking for old music"

Re: Looking for new music!!

Sorry, I didn't read Brad's comment carefully. Yes, Matt Molloy sometimes overuses counter melodies, but in my opinion his playing is much harmless than Lunasa's and Martin Hayes'.

Tufbo could get Lunasa's album, but I'm sure he will be sick of it later, just like me. It excite many listeners a lot, but it doesn't last for long. Of course, I don't deny that their performance is great on the stage, but the studio recordings are....

Re: Looking for new music!!

For brilliant whistle and flute - try Lawrence Nugent. A complete revelation!!!

Re: Looking for new music!!

I find Jack And Charlie Coen's album "the branch Line" more
exciting of all the Lunasa's.

Re: Looking for new music!!

I just want to underline that I have listened to Matt Molloy ( a lot!), Tommy Peoples, Paul Brady, Laurence Nugent and off course I like it!!! I like it like hell, but I think listening to what musicians can do together is much more powerful listening to!
Off course I like the old ones like Leo Rowsome (very good piper), but that belongs to the older ITM. It was The Chieftains (and others too) that picked up the old ITM that was dying more and more out. They picked it up and made people listen to it again. This all happend in the 50's and 60's, and what comes after this is what I call the new ITM. I have over 600 ITM songs, old and new, and all I want is some new ITM I haven't heared before.
P.S Thanks for all the replies!!!!!!

# Posted on April 17th 2003 by tufbo

Re: Looking for new music!!

Don't worry Turfbo I don't take it personally & there are a lot of recordings of people playing together that are great. I wanted to point out that you could go & listen to Matt Molloy or you could go & listen to players that Matt Molloy learned his music from.

I put my music into two categories listening music & learning music some sits in both categories. A band like Lunusa has supertalented musicians pushing their abilities to the limit. It's nice when they do it, but those players have also done their homework by listening to & learning the tradition. It's fine when they do it because they can pull it off, but it doesn't work when someone who doesn't have that level of talent is trying to pull the same thing off. It's even worse when they don't even know the difference. If you want music to just listen to sure listen to all the top 40 green linnett stuff. If you really want to end up playing like one of those green linnet top 40 people start listening to the people that they learned the music from.

New ITM old ITM, sorry kid-o it don't work like that. Maybe all that flash appeals to people who don't really appreciate Irish music for what it is, but all the good musicians I've ever met don't give a damn about all that flash. If anything it makes them groan & turn off the cd player. I think you'll end up a lot better off if you learn the standard 2000-3000 old tunes before you go learning the new ones. The old ones are usually still around for a reason, they're the good ones.

Re: Looking for new music!!

I'm sorry for being a bit angry on you there!
I agree in your points, I just misunderstood it from in hte beginning. You see we both think a bit like about that listening and learning thing. And I was just about to write that too, but the computer crashed. So what I really was looking for was listening music!
Sorry for my temper!!

Re: Looking for new music!!

Tufbo - I'll forgive you giving out to us on the nearby bodhran thread. I normally wouldn't, nor would the others here, but I suspect your age (16) and the impressive knowledge of The Music (as you get to know us better here, you'll discover that some people use the three-letter-word, which I can't pronounce - how you say? Itim? Itmah? EyeTeeEmm? - while others who feel more connected to it just say The Music) that you have for your years, saved you.

Does your music collection include any actual sessions? I suspect it doesn't, because humour and enjoying yourself in other people's company, be it in real life, or like this - online, and having some jokes together is all part of what this culture is about. I'm getting to the stage now that I much prefer listening to a good session recording than a polished recorded performance! - because that's what this is actually all about!

If you need some live session tapes/CD's, there's a few of us here that could send some to you. Let us know and we'll (well I for one will) oblige.

Danny.

You can contact Danny directly (or any other the Session member) by clicking on his name under his posts, so's you know. :)

Re: Looking for new music!!

I am heavily dependent on the recordings and always feel guilty of that. But, to excuse, that's because I was born and started listening to ITM in Japan.

Tufbo, Norway is not so far away from Ireland. Just fly over to the country and listen to the real session music there. While I was studying in Edinburgh as an exchange student for one year, I took advantage of the situation and often went to a certain pub in the city for quality traditional music (both Scottish and Irish). Of course, I also sailed over to Ireland several times and became a regular of some pubs in several cities.

Needless to say, there are various kinds of sessions, but it seems you are a quite good listener and will probably find truly traditional and exciting music.

It doesn't matter if you cannot taste Guinness or Jameson yet.

# Posted on April 18th 2003 by slainte

Re: Looking for new music!!

Tufbo,
Try a couple of cd's by the fiddle player Ben Lennon. Ben is really traditional and his cd's are pretty close to what you'd hear in a real pub session (played by really good musicians, that is) and are about as far from the electronically sanitized studio tracks put out by some bands and players as you can get.
I had the pleasure and privilege last year of being at one of Ben's rare UK gigs (his only one in England, someone said), in which he was accompanied by a local Bristol guitarist and a Bristol fiddler who is one of Ben's senior pupils from his master classes in Ireland. What I heard at that gig is more or less what you'll hear on the cd's, except that there are more players on the recordings.
The cd's are:
"Dog Big and Dog Little" on Claddagh, CC51CD
"Ben Lennon & Friends - The Natural Bridge" on CICD139, in which nearly all of the tracks were recorded in Meehan's, The Cosy Corner Bar, Kiltyclogher, Co Leitrim. The sleeve notes with this cd have a full account of Ben's musical development and the traditional influences on his style.

If yes, well thanks. I have studied a bit though.
And to Trevor: I'm checking out Ben Lennon on claddaghs website now, claddaghrecords.com wasn't it.

Re: Looking for new music!!

Bo - by reading your posts, yes I do. I dread to think what planet I was on at aged 16! - but it's not all theory - you have to have fun. I'm sorry, I should have said to send me an email by clicking on my name. Maybe Jeremy would be able to delete your post with your address on?
Jeremy?
Will get recordings to you when the opportunity presents itself.

Best wishes

Re: Looking for new music!!

To Domhniaill: Thanks! Of course the music is about having fun, why else would a 16 year old skateboarder from Norway play/listen to it? I just think that you need some knowledge too, not because you have to, but because you're interested in it. And I think a good way of getting (SOME) knowledge from is here discussing (and argueing) with people, the rest of it will grow up with the years of playing and listening.
Ah, yes.. How do you pronounce your name? Domnill mack eeyh or smoething?
