Rachamid a Bhean Bheag

Rachamid a Bhean Bheag

Does anybody know where there's an ABC for Rachamid a Bhean Bheag? This was the last tune on a Chieftain's video I saw recently; it's a reel in B minor.

Thanks!

Re: Rachamid a Bhean Bheag

I'll look for it, but it would help to have the english translation...something like, "No Regard for Riches"? Is there a "standard" english name? Or can you at least post the first bar or two?

Re: Rachamid a Bhean Bheag

Hmm, haven't a clue as to the English translation. This is from the Chieftains video (also on CD, I think) with Nancy Griffith and Roger Daltrey; I think it's called "An Irish Evening" or something like that. This is the finale piece, where they intersperce this tune with solo performances from everybody, playing other tunes. (And BTW, I wouldn't mind learning the tune Paddy Maloney plays on whistle, or the jig Martin Fay plays, also!

The 1st part (1st 8 bars) has very common patterns and may be hard to find, but the 2nd part is fairly distinctive.
An approximation of how it goes is:

Bm reel

FBBA B2cB|A2AF A2FA|...

And while I'm at it, a snippet from the reel Maloney plays on the whistle is something like:

reel in Em

edBA G2GB|F2FB E2EB|...

Anybody spot that one?

Thanks,

Joe

Re: Rachamid a Bhean Bheag

I know 'Bhean Bheag' means 'little woman'. I'm fuzzy on 'Rachamid'.

Em tune

Can't help with the Bm tune, but your Em reel snippet seems to be "Julia Delaney". Normally played in Dm, so you can play it as if in Em on a C whistle.

I thought a Bhean Bheag was something you kick around in Irish Mghacky-Seack.

Ochh, me lassies, w'y 'tis nane oother than Miss MacLeod's Reel, played in the key of A... :O) Yes, I know that each part ends on a B, but, it is in the key of A.

Their version is different from mine, but this is somewhat similar. Don't know which part the Cheiftains play first, but this is the way that I do it. They have done this piece as described by jomac (with people coming in and out with solos on other tunes, always returning to this as an ensemble, before the next one steps forward...

Here goes:

cB|:A2 a2 fefa|cccB c2 cB|...

There are a lot of variations which come into the phrasing of this tune, and in the actual notes played, as well. I like to play the tune this way because it then goes on two strings, and if you play drones, then.... there are no string changes!!! I can focus on getting a pounding rhythm going with my bow, and the tune just SCREAMS....lots of fun.

ps... leave the drones out in when playing in a session.

Beam me up, Scotty!

Is that in the tunes part of the site yet?

Re: Beam me up, Scotty

ooooooh, I asked for that, didn't I. My brothers were Star Trek fans, and I used to get that all the time. They watched it every day, even the reruns until they had memorized the scripts for almost every episode. My response: Kipten Kairk, Ay kanny roon thase wee poor
motters at wairp nane mooch langer... :-)

the tune is already in the tunes section, but in the key of G. I am feeling quite sheepish, now, after my little diatribe the other day, concerning playing in the key of G. This *was* a set-up, right?

The complete tune can be found in the tunes section under the title of "The Gray Old Lady of Raasay. (My apologies, Jeromy.)
