Hello Friends
Could anyone give me the melody to this in maybe ABC form or any other form or could someone tell me where i could get it .
Oh I want to play it on the bouzouki
Regard
eddie
jeez saint , even I played that one by ear at the first or second go
there is pretty much just:
(in D) the melody that comes just before "they got cars big as bars" which is not a million km removed from the instrumental melody in "Broad Majestic Shannon"
and
the outro which is similar to the melody of the "I could have been someone/but so could anyone" bit
Hi silverspear
Hows life just, does this mean people can't do it .Maybe if I got help for the first one or two I could start picking it up by ear then. Thanks bren I'll have a go at that.
regards
eddie
Eddie, I can play it on a zouk, well if it is GDAE or EADG (I don't know the top from the bottom). Trying to pick it out, as a tune, by yourself is more rewarding. Do you know scales? I ask in all seriousness because I played a mandolin for 25 years before I learnt any scales. Made it a lot easier to play, there appears to be a pattern to music.
Here's sheet music for Fairy Tale of New York: http://www.fullbodyburn.com/files/Set1/FairyTaleofNewYork-inD.pdf but I can translate that to ABC for you sometime if you can't read sheet music. Obviously learning by ear gives one the most options in the musical world, but I think people need to be a lot more supportive of those of us who don't have that background, or are just learning. We each play for different reasons and there is absolutely nothing wrong from playing via abc or sheet music. Enjoy!
Hi, I play the fiddle (you may have guessed from my name) and i was wondering, does anyone know or have the sheet music for this tune and would be willing to share it with me?
HI mistercliff thanks very much for sending me the sheet music i did see that you had posted it above but i wasnt sure if it was for the fiddle or another instrument. I'll start practising it ready for christmas!
That sheet music might work, but only if you ignore the "common time" (4/4) signature and bar-lines, play it in 3/4, and take the high parts down an octave.
I reworked it in 3/4 & made a few other changes.
Believe it or not I kept the high parts.
Just don't play it on a high D whistle.
Unless you like that sort of thing.

Hey Eddie!
Can we start a betting pool for how long it will take for someone to write a post suggesting that you learn it by ear instead :p

Re: Fairy Tale of New York
Well, I was just about to suggest that but I suspected the post was a wind up!
Would you not be better off playing it on the bodhran if we can find you the "abc" for that?

Re: Fairy Tale of New York
you need GDAE to get it instinctively
I have no idea how to write abc in 3/4 properly but the instrumental melodies are a bit like this, if "2" = the value of a single beat of 3/4
a3ba2 f2d2f2 a3ba2 e4d2 f3ed2 B2G2B2 A2B2c2 d6
or
d3ef2 e2d2e2 f2e2d2 B6
a3ba2 f2d2f2 f3ga2 e6
a3ba2 f2d2e2 f2e2d2 B5A
d3ef2 a2f2d2 e2f2e d6
then
D4C2 E4D2 D4d2 d4c2 c4B2 B6
B2c2d2 A4F2 F4D2 G4F2 F4E2 E4
now if some kind soul can figure out what I mean by those hieroglyphics you should have enough notes to work it out

We should put together a Christmas cd, Fairy tale, christmas in killarney, some Irish takes on other traditional songs. It'd be fun!
