Modal Be-bop Jam in a Pan-Asian Sulphate Driven Speed Techno Club??
Modal Be-bop Jam in a Pan-Asian Sulphate Driven Speed Techno Club??
So you're in your familiar session setting.
Most of the usuals are in, a bit thinner than normal (what ever "normal" is!).
Anyway in walks a geezah with a fiddle. He sits down and joins in.
He plainly knows the tunes, has an authentic and pleasing tone and is apparently enthusiastic..
He leads us through a few tunes.
After a couple of sets all is not going well.
I can't seem to get in the groove.
I look round; other players are also faltering, stopping and looking quizzical.
I realized that during a set he keeps getting faster and faster and ruining the tunes.
This bloke, fab as he is on the surface, plainly is not listening to the ensemble and causing musical breakdown.
Those that try and keep up cause the session to sound like a modal be-bop jam in a pan-Asian sulphate driven speed techno club.
He was more disruptive than any numbers of unskilled bodhran or six string devil bashers (or any other un-favourite instrumentalists).
It seems a shame that someone who has obviously spent a lot of life learning to play and presumably has an interest in "the Tradition" lacks the one of the basic musicianly attributes i.e. listening to the other players.
You may be a rank amateur and not very skilled but if you listen and play along “nicely” you’re doing a lot more for “the Tradition” than this fellah.

"Modal Be-bop Jam in a Pan-Asian Sulphate Driven Speed Techno Club" This sounds fantastic, new wave trad for the slacker generation. Must get my tie-dyes out of storage along with my djembe-djembe, or was he a footballer!

Seems to be a run of musicians these days that have trouble listening to other players around'em. Maybe it's because a lot of'em spend so much time playing alone learning from recordings rather than learning from and playing with other musicians.

If he speeds up in sets like that he has another major flaw in his musicality, apart from not interacting with others.

"Modal Be-bop Jam in a Pan-Asian Sulphate Driven Speed Techno" sounds like something John Cage would try to put together.
Did anyone check the man's pupils?

Best thread title ever.
That's a shame though. Tough to imagine people don't listen while they make music.
