fiddle lessons

fiddle lessons

my family and I are finaly taking a trip to Ireland, in june 2008, and I would very much like to take a few real irish fiddle lessons. I am really interested in the music of Sligo, but any lessons at all would be great! I have been playing fiddle for eight years, and i would like to call myself a celtic fiddler, but I need some help with technique. Is anyone, or does anyone know of a teacher.
thanks,
reaghan

Re: fiddle lessons

Where abouts in Maine are you? There is a woman who works with Jonathan Cooper named Lauren Rioux--at least that's who I think it was that I met, it was several years ago--who is a very nice fiddler and teacher. She's not strictly Irish but I think she could help you devope technique.

If you are interested in Sligo though, and you have a fast internet connection, you should try Brian Conway. He is really one of the best New York/Sligo players and teachers and from what I hear, he very much focuses on the basics of what makes it sound "Irish". He does interent lessons. http://www.brianconway.com/

Re: fiddle lessons

There are plenty of good fiddlers and teachers in Ireland, as well as in New England and Maine.

Can you give us a better idea of where you live in Maine, and where plan to go when you get to Ireland?

Re: fiddle lessons

You might also try Tricia Clark. She lives in Ennis, I believe. Here's her web site. I've heard several of mp3's of hers and she's a fine player.

I'd also recommend Theresa Bourke at the Fiddler's Retreat. I just thought that Co Clare would be a little closer to you if you're in Co Sligo. The Fiddler's Retreat is near Thurles in Co Tipperary. She's a great teacher and it's probably worth the trip.

Re: fiddle lessons

One more thing. If you do go to Fiddler's retreat, you'll probably get taken to at least a couple sessions that aren't frequented by American's that often. There are some great local musicians in Tipp.

Re: fiddle lessons

while we're on the topic, I plan on being in Ireland oct 23-31. Was thinking I might head up to Co. DOnegal, as I've never been up around there. Any recommendations for teachers up there? Or anywhere else really as my plans are still flexible—will travel pretty much anywhere, though I prefer towns to big cities. get enough city life here were I am.
