Battlestar Galactica music question

Battlestar Galactica music question

Ok, here's one for the dorks:

In Season Two of Battlestar Galactica (the new series), the humans settle on New Caprica. They have a party when they found their new colony. The party features Irish music.

What tunes are they playing?

Re: Battlestar Galactica music question

they aren't "real" irish tunes, they are of the shockingly bad hollywood facsimile variety, if I remember rightly - and I think I do. I used to really hate it when you just knew an 'emotional' scene was about to unfold and the bloody pipes would start up. The worst aspects of an otherwise pretty good series.

Re: Battlestar Galactica music question

No you're wrong. The tunes are:

The Star Above the Garter
The Morning Star
The *Nova* Scotia
Around the World for Sport
The Moon-coin reel
First Light

Re: Battlestar Galactica music question

Oh, I'm sorry, how could I have been so foolish! I thought it was all hollywood ersatz, but now I realise how terribly wrong I've been, my repertoire is clearly more limited than I had thought.

Please accept my apologies. ;-)

Re: Battlestar Galactica music question

There aren't pipes in that music. I recall drumming and fiddles (though you do not see the musicians) and possibly flute.

Interesting to speculate why they chose Irish music. I think it somewhat fitting: they are exiles, like loads of Irish. The music is also a kind of homeworld reminder, like Irish music was (and still is) in North America for the Gaelic diaspora.

Irish music also got given much of its form by exiles: when you are away form home, you think much more consciously about what "home" means; lots of emigrant Irish (a staggering #, actually, one of the untold stories of the colonisation of North America and Australia) actually *returned* to Ireland after emigrating and many of these brought new tunes back (and lots of emigrants wrote tunes about leaving).

Although overall the series really is an examination of 9/11 and its consequences on the American psyche (including the Iraq war).

Chris, I meant throughout the series when I referred to the pipes, not the specific instance you have mentioned.

Why are Irish musicians such damn geeks?
"Battlestar Galactica"?
Sell your Star Wars figurine collection and start watching "Curb Your Enthusiasm", no reels or jigs there.

Re: Battlestar Galactica music question

I think I know the scene you're thinking about. I remember trying to recognize the tune as well.

It definitely sounded like generic celtic pipes-ish stuff. Not sure if there were real instruments there or not.

At any rate, odds are the musicians in question composed the tunes for the show. If they did, then they'd likely get royalty payments for every playing/selling of the show in question. If they had played a traditional tune, they'd miss out on the royalties.

Besides, these people are supposed to be light-years away from earth! Why would they be listening to tunes from Ireland? :)

Re: Battlestar Galactica music question

Wikipedia seems to have a very detailed entry on the music of battlestar galactica which confirms that it's all specially writenn for the series.

Never seen it myself, but one of the blokes at work is very enthusiastic about it as he reckons it gives him the chance to ogle attractive women under the guise of spending "quality" time with the kids.
