Where can I find Paddy O'Brien tunes?

Where can I find Paddy O'Brien tunes?

I'm looking for a good source for Paddy O'Brien tunes. (The Tipperary box player, not the Offaly man.) I've been in one or two sessions lately where a lot of his stuff is played (I won't name the guilty players) and I don't know any of it.
I'm told that there is a book of his tunes, but I think it's out of print. Anybody know where I can find a copy?
And could anyone recommend any CDs with his compositions on?

Re: Where can I find Paddy O'Brien tunes?

There’s a book of Paddy O’Brien (Nenagh) tunes, “The Compositions of Paddy O’Brien” which came out in 1992. This includes some great tunes such as The Ormond Sound, The Nervous Man, Cooley’s Hornpipe, Boys of Lough Gowna and New House jigs, etc. Copies of the book can be obtained over the internet at http://www.cranfordpub.com/books/OBrien.htm.

There’s also a CD of his compositions which features his daughter Eileen along with Nenagh box player, Willie Fogarty of Comhaltaslive fame – see http://www.thesession.org/recordings/display.php/865.
Willie Fogarty was a great friend of Paddy O’Brien and transcribed much of his music. He also played in the Ormond Céilí Band which was coached by Paddy and won three All-Ireland titles back in the mid eighties.

Well, I was going to say that the Irish Traditional Music Archive will let you photocopy pages from his book but then I found out you're from Toronto.

Re: Where can I find Paddy O'Brien tunes?

within the last couple of years, eileen o'brien has released a wonderful new cd titled "the fiddler's choice," which contains many paddy o'brien tunes. there is also paddy o'brien's own cd, which is i believe a green linnet release. is it called "banks of the shannon? it has some of his compositions on it and may not be in print, but is obtainable with a little searching....

Re: Where can I find Paddy O'Brien tunes?

You can find a helpful (and free) collection of Paddy O'Brien transcriptions here:

http://www.ceolas.org/tunes/

I downloaded and printed everything on this page about a year ago, but I didn't bookmark it. It took me about. .246 seconds to relocate it with Google.

Re: Where can I find Paddy O'Brien tunes?

Bad news and good news from cranford.com:
'We sold the last one a short while ago... An enlarged edition of Paddy's book is currently being compiled by his daughter Eileen, though no publication date has been set.'

Thanks for the additional info, folks.
