Right you lot, Wakey, Wakey!! - time to hand in your homework!
Since Max's Pledge thread a few weeks ago, who actually tried making some kind of pledge to upgrade their repertoire, and if so who has done so? AND of those who have got THAT far, who has played out a new tune or two at a session?
Be honest, now, you'd only be kidding yourself on otherwise!
As for me, I've had a stab at Johnny Goin to Ceili - the version I've been doing is a bit different from the version on here. I've had a look at Sailing into Walpole's March, but that's as far as I've got with that! Trying to get the Floating Crowbar a bit more session-ready. A few others which I'll remember if or when this thread develops.....
I never read nothing about no pledge. But I've learned three Bulgarian tunes in the last few weeks - two Rachenitsas (7/8) and one Gankino Horo or Kopanitsa (11/8). Does that count? I promise not to spring them on any unsuspecting Blythe Hillbillies.
I've learnt The Broken Pledge, and the Porthole of the Kelp and have the Shoemaker's Daughter in my sights, to complete a cracking set played by Clare Keville and Pat O'Connor on YouTube. Wish more people would play at that speed.
I've learned a number of South African tunes.. apart from that, The Leitrim Lilt (GREAT tune), Bill Harte's and John Brady's from a CD by John Williams.. I intended to check out the floating crowbar to see if I knew it, but completely forgot :o
My repertoire hasn't grown much over the last year or so since I really started focusing mainly on the pipes...the humidity here has been un-pipefriendly so I've been playing the fiddle a lot the last week. I'm amazed at how many tunes I've gotten rusty or foggy on...used to have about 300+ on the fiddle!
But, in the couple weeks, I've picked up:
The Kilcooley Woods
An Buachaill Dreoite (both the fling and jig versions)
10,000 Farewells
The Purse Rusted Shut
Farewell to Milltown
Petticoat Loose
At New Year's, I forge a mental list of "earnest hopes", finding they don't warrant as much self-flagellation as genuine resolutions when broken or compromised. I regard the Pledge with similar earnest hope.
I must have missed the pledge thread, but about a year ago I made a promise to myself to learn how to play polkas properly one day, and I'm trying to fulfil that promise now. I've set myself a target of 40 or so to learn properly and work up to standard. So far I've done 2
Yes, I hear people saying "Everyone knows Drowsy Maggie", but hey, I'm a newbie. These two finally put me up over 50 Irish tunes. You gotta start somewhere.
Still working on a 4 tune polka set and a reel (Ring Around The Moon) that I learned in Ireland last month.
Since I'm only allowed one discussion per day I'll tag this onto the end of my latest.
At the risk of incurring the wrath of all the smokers (do I care?), has anyone else heard of this report published in the BMJ, by doctor and session box player John Garvey? http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/83906.php
He was interviewed on Today on Radio 4 (UK) this morning. Should be able to Listen Again in an hour or so. If anyone wants to post all this as a new discussion be my guest.
Hi dave - bought a new flute stand for a fiver - so no rush!
Yeah, i liked the closing comments - "think what it's doing to your lungs"....(obvious really).
meemtp: "My repertoire hasn't grown much over the last year or so since I really started focusing mainly on the pipes"
Hey , I never thought of that as an excuse. Since you mention it, I've been trying to play the fiddle for the last three years, so I've had enough on y plate just trying to get my bow round the tunes I already know. Plus, I've moved to a place where there isn't any Irish music and was forced to join a klezmer band. (Although, I confess, learning the Bulgarian tunes was my own choice.)
I learnt "The Mooncoin Jig" , having spent at least six months meaning to learn it, but not tried it at a session yet. Also been recapping. I'm determines to go to more sessions when I'm back from the Far East.

Re: Pledge Part II
Pledges? We don't need no stinkin' Pledges! (you gotta imagine the accent there...)
I didn't chime in on that thread, but I have learned 3 tunes in the last week. Does that qualify?

Re: Pledge Part II
You could make your pledge retrospectively, then that'd qualify

Re: Pledge Part II
Good call! Due diligence, I like it.
Well, The Wise Maid was one of the ones I conquered recently since Max made the call.
Perhaps you'll remember my 'mixing' issue with it?

Sweeney’s Polka and Chief O’Neill Favorite as well, but Julia Delaney is still under construction. Look for new tune mix-up mishaps shortly…

Re: Pledge Part II
I finally wrangled the Langstrom Pony into the stable, studied with The Scholar, and discovered The Crock of Gold - a good week for me.
I also figured out the openning riff to Enter Sandman to play when our Bodhran players enter the pub...(they needed a little theme music)

Still working on 1 or 2 from the Kelly's bar tape. No names for these but I'm sure you know what they are, Danny. I'll try them out later.

I recently learned Small Hills of Offaly. I'm pretty sure it was written by Paddy O'Brien -- the younger, living one, that is.

Re: Pledge Part II
Pledge?? Current ITM tunes in various states of disarray:

Bag of Spuds
Dowd's #9
King of the Fairies
Morning Star (Emin--thanks Dow!)
Óró sé do bheatha 'bhaile
The first three I'm working on for fun, the latter two are embellished arrangements for the band.
I know, "Óró..." is a song... Shakin' the barley, shakin' it here boss

Well, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is finally paying me for work that I've done 2 months ago. There is at least a Waltz book in my future.

Sorry, I'm still recovering from learning 12 tunes in one week while Reverend was here. Meanwhile, I've forgotten 24 tunes I used to know....
