I'm an old wrinkly sittin' in a barn...

I'm an old wrinkly sittin' in a barn...

Just had to put this clip up after reading Nick.B’s thread on Folk Playes. Apologies to all non banjo lovers, or the fact that it’s not ITM but it’s a clip I stumbled across while thinking about what had got me into folk music and further into ITM way back in the fifties. (before anyone says it, yes I’m an old wrinkly who’s still 16, tea chest bass being first instrument back then……….)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hr9FP93o8Ro&mode=related&search=

Listening to Seeger, Guthrie, Sonny Terry, Brownee McGhee got me into it and on to ITM and it’s still there 50 years later. And yeeee………….. I’m still sittin’ chewin’ a straw! (reading the yellow board)

Folk playes
Why does nearly everyone my age (16) think that folk music is for old people who sit in barns on top of haystacks eating hay?????!!!!!!!!

I guess I fit the bill right. (put’s steel helmet on, and takes cover…. Incoming hee hee) Comments on the clip anyone?

Hi Mck,
If you're using Mozilla Firefoz browser, there is a great plugin on their site called "unplug". Just one click and save the file, it's great.

If not go to this site and copy the UTube page address into the URL box and it will download it for you.

Hope this helps..........

Re: I'm an old wrinkly sittin' in a barn...

Hi - thanks for the tip about "Unplug". Great tip and a really easy one to use.

To make it viewable on your machine:

Flash videos are NOT directly viewable without a flash video player. After downloading the video you need to:

1) Rename it from "get_video" (the default) to "xxx.flv" where xxx is any name you want of any length

2) Install FLVplayer - google but available from http://applian.com/flvplayer/?src=GFLV_PLAYER

3) Just drag 'n' drop onto the FLV player icon or use "Open with..."

Obviously for subsequent videos you just rename them and then you use the player you installed in step 2) above

Hope this helps.

Mark

Re: I'm an old wrinkly sittin' in a barn...

Mission accomplished, it is now buried somewhere in the computer. Next step is to find it and play it.
If only the average session player could take the blinkers off for a little while and explore the potential of the washboard in ITM! It can provide that beautiful heart and soul of the old ceili band and much much more.
My next product is limberjacks, but that is a new discussion that should attract a few blowflies.

Re: I'm an old wrinkly sittin' in a barn...

HI - thank goodness only one stubby! And it just goes to prove us folkies are also tecnically literate and not just experts on the respective merits of different types of baling twine!!

Re: I'm an old wrinkly sittin' in a barn...

technically.... oops - wish I was verbally literate too!!

Baling twine, did someone say baling twine??? ;-)

Damn, da, is that you? I didn't know you were a member. 'Mc-know-all' is maybe too obvious a tag, eh pa? Save some of those stubbies for me...

Thanks for the link 'tickle'...much appreciated. I was only short the bale and a straw to chaw...

Just watched it again......great for repeating it C, I think it's a real piece of history. There are a number of others on that utube thread that are also worth watching................

Re: I'm an old wrinkly sittin' in a barn...

Just one more thing........to then put it on a CD?

Re: I'm an old wrinkly sittin' in a barn...

Ah!!

I'm assuming you're talking about just extracting the audio to put onto CD.

The really simple thing to do is get some audio recording software (Audacity is mentioned a lot as it's free - or try Adobe Audition) - set your machine's audio controls (search for the suitable links by going to "start" then "control panel") to record "wave sound" and then you can play the flash video and record it in the audio recording software.

This is a bit of a workaround, and you need to make sure any system sounds aren't going to appear suddenly, as they'll get recorded too. Make sure the sample rate in the audio software is set to 16-bit 44.1kHz stereo, otherwise you'll completely wipe your hard disk. Only kidding. But it won't transfer to CD properly otherwise. Then you burn a CD using whatever software you have to hand.

A technically neater way to do this would be to find some program which directly extracts the audio from flash video and directly converts it into .wav or other audio formats directly. Again, Google is the best way to find this out.

Hope that helps!!

Re: I'm an old wrinkly sittin' in a barn...

The latest version of realplayer has a feature, where you just move your cursor over the clip being shown, and a drop down appears which allows you to "Download this video". And that one is well worth downloading tctelboy.

Re: I'm an old wrinkly sittin' in a barn...

On the link that tickle gave you, they allow you to convert it to WAV of MP3, both audio files... Here's that link again ~

http://www.zamzar.com/
http://www.zamzar.com/url

& ~ You don't need to install that 'FLVplayer' if you already have a media player that will handle whatever conversion you choose. Microsoft Media Player can handle these audio ones, as can the player that comes with an Apple Mac...

Or if you've RealPlayer, as Backer says, there's another option...or Audacity... Best of luck... I've done that myself, but because I want to transcribe some bits from the recording. I've sent a file of this video to a close friend and I suspect he'll put the link on his website and post it to the thousands on his mailing list...

Thanks again for this lovely piece. We've always been fond of Pete Seeger, and this is a hoot, as well as having some great music and pictures woven into it...

Re: I'm an old wrinkly sittin' in a barn...

Going to try that - looks a great site. But if you specifically want to transfer from flash video to CD-burnable audio files, a wav (because it's uncompressed CD-spec audio) of anything like a 4 min flash video is going to be 35MB - hence if you are going to transfer to a CD it makes more sense to do it locally on your machine after downloading.
