Please pardon my stupidity, but I will buy anybody a pint who can explain the ABC notation listed with the tunes on this site. I'm only looking for the chord changes to the tunes. Cheers!
Usually tunes are submitted only with their melodies and that's preferable because it makes them easier to locate when doing a search through the tune database with abc fragments but occasionally tunes may be submitted with chords, or chords may be supplied in the Comments section by the submitter and by other contributors. You always can use the Comments section of a particular tune to request its chords.
Part two of the lesession tutorial cited by rogfox explains how chords are marked up in abc notation. The notes of a chord can also be enclosed within brackets. Once you understand how to recognize chord symbols, look at this thread http://www.thesession.org/discussions/display/7591/comments#comment162664 for interesting examples of chord markup and abc potential.
The consensus here is that it's better to learn chord theory related to the music and listen to a lot of music to develop your playing rather than habitually request chords for individual tunes, and you'll find plenty of discussions about *that* by doing a search on this site using words and phrases like "chords," "guitar chords," and "chord theory".
There are also a few books on the subject, including by members here, and here is just one example:
"Celtic Back-Up" by Chris Smith, with CD
Mel Bay Publications, 1999
ISBN: 0-7866-4065-0
Finding a living source, someone to mentor you, is always the best option, as long as they have patience and you are able to 'connect'...
Mostly, folks who contribute here choose not to chain a tune to a specific sequence of chords, which can be a very individual thing, good and bad, so you won't find many notations here that include them...
Youbetter; good morning, goodmorning. Yes, now chords. That would be guitar chords. In ABC that is probably the parts with quotation marks. Oh yes, fidkid got that one. There must be more you need to know. Can you find Chico, California? just head for Reno & keep going. I will try to find out what chords are. I mean catch some of the nuances by looking over the notes of the master Irish chordists. Just go to Duffy's & grab a table. I'll be there shortly. Now they don't have pints only pitchers, & only Guinness. Well now ~ welcome to TheSession. ceolachan is quite right, now I do not want to call myself a mentor, but it just so happens I am still living. Wonderful asset too. Cheers!
Pitchers of Guiness? I'll be right down...as soon as I can find my keys. Thanks to everybody for responding.
By the way, TheMuse, how late is Duffy's open? I live in Boston.

Re: don't know my ABC's
Just a quick search on this site for ABC Tutorials brought this one up:

Re: don't know my ABC's
Youbetter, the ABCs almost always only show the melody line. If chords are included, they'll be in quotation marks:
|"G" Bdg "D"fAD|
You probably already know that for some people here the whole idea of backing chords is fraught with peril.

Sometimes, and I think it the better option, suggested chords are added in the comments... Ihave great respect for that word ~ 'suggested'...

You're just after that free pint, now aren't ya, TheMuse? So transparently mercenary. I respect that.

Re: don't know my ABC's
Well ~ at least a pitcher. At Duffy's they don't like washing those little glasses. Youbetter, don't leave. I'm just out the door now.
