I've had no luck using the ABC search function in trying to find a jig I heard at session Sunday. I think the issue may be the large number of ways a similar phrase can be written in ABC.
The tune is a jig in G major, the first bar:
G roll E G D
Now, I've tried doing the G roll as ~G3 , as G3, and as G>GG all of which seem to be used by various people when writing tunes with G rolls in ABC. Are there other variants I'm missing? Thanks.
You can search on any phrase in the tune. I usually try to find two or 3 phrases that don't necessarily have any ornamentation. And I find that using the google search function (in the home tab) is more useful.
So, for instance, if I was searching for the Kesh Jig, I might type in:
edd gdd gfg aga
which is from two different parts of the tune, but pretty much going to be in every setting of the Kesh. That returns 3 jigs (and a couple of discussions). If I want to narrow it down a bit, I would type in:
"edd gdd" "gfg aga"
Which returns 1 jig (and a couple of discussions)...
So in your case, I would try ignoring the roll, and finding some other bits to try typing in.
ABC's can also be searched from TheSession HomePage
From the home page click search, enter the phrase enclosed w/quotation marks, & check the Web bubble.
This way you can enter things like ornamentation & note length;
"~G3 EGD"
This returns a Goggle search of ABC files from the entire Web.
Wurzel; in a perfect world (perfect web) tune submissions would be the raw form of a tune. Ornamentation & variations could all be posted under the Comments tab for a given tune.
Cheers!
I agree that a perfect world would be different than the one we live in, but welcome to reality
The other nice thing about the google search (as opposed to the normal tune search) is that it searches any ABC that is posted in the comments section of a tune as well.
So TheMuse, you and Wurzel could go through all 7703 tunes and take all the ornamentation out, post it in the comments, and just search that way!
Thanks for all the suggestions! I hadn't thought of using GFG for the G roll. But, the Roaring Barmaid is not the tune. I would use more fragments, but unfortunately I can't remember any more!
Thanks TheMuse!!! The Mouse In The Mug it is!
Strange that when I did a search using that exact first bar:
~G3 EGD that tune did not come up.
No, there's no tune list at the session, you just show up and play.
Thank you Mr. Cook. I checked that out. The search function under the Tunes 'Advanced' tab is different from the one on the home page. Try a search of TheSession from the home page. ~G3 EGD should return:
#1 Roaring Barmaid
#2 The Mouse in The Mug
#3 The Road to Skye
#4 The Maid on The Green ~G3 egd

Could this be it: http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display.php/91 ?
I tried GFG EGD.

Re: trouble with ABC tune search
I find it quite annoying that people have submitted tunes with the ornamentation in the ABC; it makes it harder to read.

Re: trouble with ABC tune search
Maybe "Have a Drink With Me"? http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display.php/1922 I can imagine substituting a G roll for the first half bar and slipping a G into the 2nd half.
