I've seen ads for Codabow's new product the Diamond GX.
Has anyone tried one and does anyone know the difference between the GX and the Classic?
The only difference I can see in the ad is the GX has a Kevlon core and the finish of the stick. They are exactly the same price. I would think that if it's a better bow than the classic the price would be more.
The Diamond GX doesn't appear to be on Codabow's website yet, but search for Codabow Diamond GX in Google and you'll come up with any number of retailers and specialists discussing it.
I’ve got one and I love it !
Normally, I’m skeptical of claims like: “Performance that was
formerly reserved for fine pernambuco bows” but this one rivals my top end Dorfler bow.
The first one that I tried (60.1 gr) was just a little ‘mushy’ but the second one (61.2 gr)
just seemed to “hit the spot”.
I’ve tried a bunch of the CF bows (including the Classic – which is good but just didn’t feel ‘right’.) The Diamond really does feel and sound like wood.
After the third near catastrophe with my favourite bow – down the pub –
I had to get one that was “bomb proof”.
Now, having said that….the Dorfler has a slightly fuller, more refined sound than
the Diamond. If I’m playing where I’m sure that the bow is not at risk I would
probably play the Dorfler - but for pubs or outdoor playing – gotta be C.F.
Sorry…More directly to the question:
…..does anyone know the difference between the GX and the Classic?
The Classic is a hollow stick with – what looks like – a ‘finer’ lay to the
fiber. To my ear, hollow sticks seem to have a thinner, dryer kind of sound.
The Diamond has the Kevlar core and a ‘courser’ lay to the weave of the fiber.
I think the Kevler core is the key to the sound of this bow.
As to the price of the Classic and the Diamond being the same…..
That’s anybody’s guess. (lazy... You might be right…cheaper to produce??)
Mary….
Glad I had some input for ya…
I’ve been lurking here for about two years and, in that time, I’ve gotten
lots of good information, inspiration, and insights….not to mention more than
a fair number of belly laughs!
Glad I’m getting to the point where I can start giving something back!
I just got a response to my email to Codabow. They said the Kevlar Acoustic core in the GX gives it a more "warm organic" sound. They did not comment on the price being the same on the GX and Classic. Of course I will try them both to see which I like best.
I owned and played a Coda Classic carbon fiber bow for several years. Excellent bow. Got to play one of the GX's recently and found it very similar--no appreciable difference in tone or responsiveness to my old Classic.
But I've since gone back to pernambuco for that "warm, organic" tone.

Re: Codabow diamond GX
The Kevlon core "may" be slightly less expensive to make, and anyway the carbon fibre bow market looks like it's getting more and more competitive.

Re: Codabow diamond GX
Thank you Fr. Jack,
Always good to hear reviews from a fellow fiddler.
Just for laughs I emailed Codabow and asked them to explain the difference.

Re: Codabow diamond GX
What some fiddlers (i.e. me) would find interesting would be a baroque version of the Diamond GX.
