hello there my name is luke,i was wondering if anyone could help me a great deal and send me the lyrics for "love will you marry me ". the song in question is on a de dannan album called selected jigs and reels i think which i cant get my hands on anymore since my room mate recorded over the tape i had of it . it was sung on the album by johnny moynihan. doesnt seem to be in any shops in dublin. it would be fantastic if anyone out there could help. thank you
It strikes me now that there's a dark side (incest perhaps?) to the words, but anyhow, here's the two verses as they are sung by Johnny Moynihan on that De Dannan recording...............
Love will you marry me, marry me, marry me,
Love will you marry me, and take me out of danger,
No I won't marry you, marry you, marry you,
no I won't marry you, for why you are no stranger,
Why did'nt you tell me so, Why did'nt you tell me so,
Why did'nt you tell me so, before you did the harm?
What harm did I do, What harm did I do,
What harm did I do,but roll ya in me arms?.......
Love will you marry me, marry me, marry me,
Love will you marry me, and take me out of danger,
No I won't marry you , marry you, marry you,
no I won't marry you, for why you are no stranger,
Why did'nt you tell me so, Why did'nt you tell me so,
Why did'nt you tell me so, what the divil aired ya?
How could I tell you so, How could I tell you so,
For if I did, there is'nt a doubt,
I never could have gained you.
I'm tired now of single life .
My mind's made up to take a wife.
To shield me from this world of strife .
And keep me out of danger.
love won't you marry me, marry me, marry me,
Love won't you marry me and keep me out of danger.
love won't you marry me, marry me, marry me,
Love won't you marry me and keep me out of danger.
I have a cottage by the sea
Adorned with flowers for her and me.
And any girl would happy be.
And I would treat her fairly.
Love won't you marry me, .........
And now that we the knot have tied.
And she for years has been my bride.
with lots of children by our side.
To shield us from all dangers
Love won't you marry me....
He follows with lilting the tune and then playing the tune.
The tune of course is also used for that wonderful classical old song 'Some say the Divil is dead, the Divil is dead, the Divil is dead, some say the Divil is dead and buried in Kilarney.
love will you marry me

Re: love will you marry me
Love, will you marry me, marry me, marry me?
Love, will you marry me, and take me out of danger?
Oh I will marry you , marry you, marry you,
Oh I will marry you, for why you are no stranger.
Why didn' ya tell me so,
Why didn' ya tell me so, for
if I did there is no doubt,
I never would have gained ya'.
That's all I can remember, and neat little ditty it is too.

Re: love will you marry me
It goes "no I won't marry you,for why you are a stranger" Most folk songs look like drivel in cold print.

You'll find it here http://www.thesession.org/recordings/display/605
I'm not sure if that album is still available, but it's a great song, and a great arangement by De Dannan.

Re: love will you marry me
Len Graham does a lovely version.

And she for years has been my bride.

He follows with lilting the tune and then playing the tune.
Not sure on what recording I heard it.

I totally thought someone was going to ask someone else to marry them via The Session.org.

Re: love will you marry me
No, I won't marry you, marry you, marry you,

No, I won't marry you and cross the briny ocean...
~ Not always a happy ending, eh?

But my heart is with Len's take on it...
# Posted on September 11th 2007 by ceolachan
Even more to heart, Len Graham and Joe Holmes used to double diddle it... That was a feat for the ears to rejoice to...
