Collective Nouns for Musicians ;->

Collective Nouns for Musicians ;->

I know it is stretching the term "musician" a little, but how about a "thicket" of bodhranista for starters?
A "jangle" of banjos?
A "barrage" of digeridoos?
A "pride" of accordions (guess what I play)?

Re: Collective Nouns for Musicians ;->

How about a "Growling Groan" of grumpy session leaders

Re: Collective Nouns for Musicians ;->

Or a "mess of musicians"?

Re: Collective Nouns for Musicians ;->

Flourish of flute players
Glut of guitarists
Violation of fiddle players
Parliament of Pipers (most time spent tuning up & prevaricating)
Colony of spoonists (as in lepers)
String of Harpists
Panel of Egg-sperts
Pair of Good Musicians (if you're lucky!)

I can't go better than the Thicket of Bodhranistas - you do sometimes get the odd intelligent one though.

James Lipton's book "An Exaltation of Larks" is the ultimate guide for collective nouns and the Game of Venery, which is what we're all playing when we come up with new collective nouns.
Under "music" Lipton gives:

A Backseat of Accompanists
A Spite of Prima Donnas
A Ruffle of Drummers
A Flutter of Flutists
A Melody of Harpists
A Poverty of Pipers
A Grope of Groupies
and my favorite
A Flatulence of Bassoonists

Other session-relevant terms include"
A Carnage of Cigarettes
A Pack of Smokers
A Cajolery of Taverners
A Blarney of Bartenders
A Pint of Irishmen
and
A Fifth of Scots

:o)

Re: Collective Nouns for Musicians ;->

Will - that just reminded me of another oddity in the collection of wierd "instruments" which are building up on this site - we used to have a rainstick man, who, with great virtuosity and precision, would invert his rainstick to add natural Irish weather sounds, at a crescendo in the tune - so he thought.

A Storm of Rainstickists.
A Clatter of Metal Men, AKA little men who wear washboards in sessions.

A necropsy of Bones players?

# Posted on March 11th 2003 by Gra5ity

Re: Collective Nouns for Musicians ;->

A pound of penny whistlers
A mine of tin whistlers
A forest of wooden flute players - or is that just their facial expressions - oops! - getting me threads tied up again...

# Posted on March 11th 2003 by Rudall the time

Re: Collective Nouns for Musicians ;->

massed melodeons
gangs of guitarists
flocks of flute-players
aggregations of accordeonists
troops of tin-whistlers
parades of pipers

er, vegetations of violins?

I think "alliteration" is the term for these, and surely you native speakers can do a lot better than me..

Re: Collective Nouns for Musicians ;->

Well then, an "affliction of accordionists"
:o)
That necropsy one is wonderful! But you could also call them a closet of bones players....

A consort of concertinas
A concern of concertinas

A spontoon of spoons (they are weapons, aren't they?)
A spoonerism of spoons (insinuitating their accidental appearance)

An arsenal of bouzoukis
A battery of bodhrans

And how about:
A snug of sessions
A trance of tunes
A landing of step dancers (sorry :o)

Re: Collective Nouns for Musicians ;->

A tremulation of Mandolins?

That's not quite right but I was feeling as though we 8 stringers were left out of the fun.

Re: Collective Nouns for Musicians ;->

There's already been a posse of posters responding to this thread, but I'd like to point out that penny whistlers are measured by the purseload, and violinists come in random acts.

A pile of crap collective nouns?

# Posted on March 11th 2003 by Rudall the time

Re: Collective Nouns for Musicians ;->

'A shower of' + 'vulgar term of choice' should cover all requirements, surely?

Will, you remind me of the Dolly Parton lyric, 'I've got new thread for my old spool...' (...'just because I'm blonde, don't think I'm dumb, cos this dumb blonde ain't no-o-o-body's foo-ool'...) - I never was quite sure if it was a euphemism, and if so, what for? :-/
