I have been given a bit of homework. While my playing partner is in Ireland... I am supposed to find a tune that will go well with 'Atholl Highlanders'. It's a really nice jig, but it has been near impossible to find something that goes well with it (and how do I really begin a search? all jigs!?). Anyway... if anyone knows the tune and could lend me a hand... I'd appreciate!
The classic set (at least, out California ways a few years back, it was) is to start with Jig of Slurs and then into Atholl Highlanders. Just don't ask Will to play with you.
What the heck. Just play Atholl Highlanders until your fingers automatically go into the one that comes after, or start playing all the jigs you know until Atholl Highlanders needs to go next.
Or play all the jigs you know *except* Atholl Highlanders and leave it at that.
(Sorry Scaryak, but I don't share your enthusiasm for those highlanders. I'd second Zina's suggestion of Jig of Slurs. Mac's Fancy also goes well with it, or try Scatter the Mud or Cliffs of Moher.)
Thanks for that Henk; I just did it in my head and its great.
The Athol Highlanders (or as its referred to around here the "Arsehole Highlanders") and Jig of slurs are of cause are Big Pipe tunes. The Athol Highlanders was written by Angus McKay (Queen Victoria's Piper, who drowned escaping from an asylum whilst suffering from tertiary Syphilis, and also almost single handedly invented the myth of the Piping McCrimmons.) in its original form it has 6 parts. Jig of slurs is one of the great GS MacLennan's tunes. You might try putting them with another Pipe tune Langstrom's Pony or a related tune the Mooncoin Jig.
All the best PP
A few friends and I got so fed up with the Lonesome Boatman that we began to refer to it as "loan us some blow, man".
I quite like the Butterfly's nickname - the flutter-by.
You can start the set with My Darling Asleep, go into Atholl Highlanders, then play Tripping Up the Stairs. I find pairing it with the Jig of Slurs a BIT much, they're both such marathon jigs....
Oh gosh, I have to remember those. Jug of Slugs! Loan Us Some Blow, Man! *snort* Geoff, My Darling A Sheep always makes me think of the only Scottish joke I know that doesn't need the rest of the joke to be funny -- "Hey -- McLeod -- get offa my ewe..." (Well, okay, maybe a knowledge of classic rock helps.)
I looked it up: I used to play A*** Highlanders followed by the Jig of Slurs. If you want a less heavy combination you could try starting with "My Wife's A Wanton Wee Thing" which despite the stupid name is a nice lively little jig.-
Paul, don't you think those stairs led you below the levels of good taste?
Thanks for the tips! I must admit that I am highly amusing by the wonderful digression going on here... weird!?! My fave real name (for a tune that is)... "I buried my wife and danced on top of her". Now that's saying something... Thanks again...
Oh, we're awfully good at digressing -- hijacking the thread, we call it. It's sort of like a Simpson's episode, where the challenge is to see how far away the situation at the end of the episode is from where the episode started.
By the way, the new episode was great -- anybody else see it? Krusty goes to Washington?
And my favorite new Simpson's joke is the Gee-Your-Hair-Smells-Terrific sports arena...now *there's* a brill piece of corporate sponsorship idea!
Try The Pet in the Kitchen. I learned this set from Mairead ni Mhaonaigh's and Frankie Kennedy's Ceol Aduaidh. There is a third jig in between Pet and Atholl, but It really isn't necessary if your not in the mood to learn it.
I know it's an old discussion, but i always play "Atholl Highlanders" followed by "Cameron Highlanders" and finish off with either "Blackthorn Stick" og "the 7?th highlanders farewell"..... all in A!

Re: making a set w/ Atholl Highlanders
In our band we play Atholl H. followed by O'Neill's Cavalcade; yes: a change from 6/8 to 4/4 time. In our case it works very well & exciting!

The Jig of Slurs has also been nicknamed - it's the Jug of Slugs to me. Should we have a new thread of "worst nickname"? Yes I know I'm sidetracking

You mean "My Darlings A Sheep".
An old thread, but that and "She Begs For More" really made me smile.

I'm sure Will has the perfect match for Atholl Highlanders. Throw some mooncoin after it. Might work for ya.

Re: making a set w/ Atholl Highlanders
Mark, the perfect match would be one that's already lit, and the tune well oiled with gasoline....

Re: making a set w/ Atholl Highlanders
Someone suggested playing 'Scary Monsters' the other day, which turned out to be the Star of Munster.

Wow, Will, you really don't like that AH tune, do you?

Re: making a set w/ Atholl Highlanders
I do. I like the lift up to Amaj, and there's enough tricky fingerwork on the second and fourth parts to keep you awake.

I've heard Whelan's Jig followed by Pay the Reckoning which builds up into Atholl Highlanders, and seems to work well.
