Any memorable discussions?

Any memorable discussions?

We have all been there weblogging & you get reamed.
One of my most cherished responses was not so long ago;

Never a dull moment here at dot.org
My question is simple ~ with one stipulation;
Do you have a particularly memorable post, discussion, or comment prior to May 1st, 2003.
I qualify the question because it would be nice to hear from some of the original dot.orgers
Cheers!

Re: Any memorable discussions?

My favorite discussion was the poetry thread. It does not meet the requirement of being before May 2003, however. I only joined in 2005, so I'm a newcomer.

I read these often, and I think it's worth a mouseclick to revisit a really happy thread.

Re: Any memorable discussions?

At risk of showing my age, my member number is 53.
I've read so many memorable discussions it would be impossible to pick just one. My favorites though, are when someone announces something they have done that made them happy. Like performing for the first time or finally being able to get through that difficult tune and eveyone jumps on to congratulate them. That's when this board really shows what it's made of. Many helpful, caring people. Of course I always enjoy the humor of the folks here as well.

Re: Any memorable discussions?

My favourite was the discussion to the tune Farewell to Chernobyl where the composer joined in half way through - an absolute classic!!

Michel Ferry's comment is the only one in his history & it is so good.
Check out the date of his post.

Re: Any memorable discussions?

I was recently scanning through the early days of thesession. Looking at how different the general tone of the board used to be.

I wasn't a member until maybe 2003, but I was married to one of the early members, and used to hear all about the wonderful community.

This isn't a "favorite discussion" or anything, but it's a pretty good indicator of how the tone used to be different:

http://www.thesession.org/discussions/display/253

Zina's comment sort of sums up the differences:

"And I especially love it that people tend to behave here as they would face to face -- in other words, civilly and with an awareness that things said out loud in front of God and everybody are important..."

Ahhh, those were the days... ;-)

Re: Any memorable discussions?

I get the impression the obvious subjects/conversations/debates have been well and truly gone over, some of them a few times. The site's getting more like a noticeboard with some very detailed tutorials thrown in, but I think this is a good thing, even if most of it is not my business.

Re: Any memorable discussions?

A shame really that I don't remember any of the sophisticated, scientific and highly informative threads - what comes to my mind is the hilarious one about shakey eggs. Then again: cheering you up after a hard day is not a bad thing.

Re: Any memorable discussions?

But lo, I have a notice!

I shall shortly be visiting Ireland in a flying machine based on a sketch by Leonardo Da Vinci, my intention being to land somewhere in the flat bit at 9 o'clock on a Tuesday morning. I will have with me: a cathedral organ in old pitch; a whistle in F#; and a 13-string cellomandozouk with 17 strings. (I acquired the latter at a festival in Holland. To be honest, I saw it on a seat, and I took it because I thought no-one else could possibly want it.)

So I need to know the following:

- All the flight paths of aircraft over central Ireland on Tuesdays,
- How long it will take me to find a session on a Tuesday morning,
- Whether my instruments will be acceptable,
- Who made my whistle.

Thank you!..

With all those instruments why wait?

Re: Any memorable discussions?

I just read through the "Chernobyl" thread. Brilliant!!

Lively but not out of control, opinionated yet not authoritative or domineering, combative without being crude or viscious, and those with information shared it liberally. Someone even seemed to drop the politics tangent when politely asked to.

Again, simply brilliant.

I could wish things were like that now at this site. Ah, well.

Re: Any memorable discussions?

Nine:

I have no doubt that all of those I have read posting here are capable of maintaining a higher tone. It has been purely a matter of choice whether or not participants remain civil and, as you said, respectful.

Encouragingly, I took note of what could have become a rather heated and nasty exchange here just this morning, and saw the situation discussed rationally, and then defused very admirably. Opinionated, but not mudslinging.

All of this to say, I hope you are right and we are looking forward to a site that is lively and informative (and at the same time without everyone having to "walk on eggs" around each other. I would not be looking for "prissy" or "formal", just common courtesy).

Best of luck,
Yours in ITM,
Rook.

When people repeat nonsense again and again and again there may be a tendancy for people to take it as truth. I will get agressive at this. Feck polite

Re: Any memorable discussions?

you think I come here for brownie points? feckin idiot, feck off

# Posted on August 28th 2007 by llig leahcim

Re: Any memorable discussions?

I can see by the above that there is no line drawn here on rudeness, crudeness, or viciousness. If there were, the like of "feckin idiot, feck off" would not float for be tolerated at this discussion group.

Sadly, it is tolerated, has been in the past, and there is no reason to think it will not continue to be so.

It would be sad (IMHO) if this is the state of many traditional musicians nowadays, to tolerate and even encourage people who behave this way.

Half-set for sale, any takers?

>>> Sadly, it is tolerated, has been in the past, and there is no reason to think it will not continue to be so.

Except that you DON'T see all the stuff that went really overboard and was deleted by Jeremy.

There have been personality conflicts like this in the past, and there will be again.

>>> It would be sad (IMHO) if this is the state of many traditional musicians nowadays, to tolerate and even encourage people who behave this way.

Don't equate what happens on this site with what is happening in the world of Irish traditional music.

As has been mentioned (in this thread even), most of the things that there are to discuss about Irish music have already been discussed here in the last 6+ years. A lot of the old-timers have drifted away because of that, some of them still post, because there is still good discussion happening (even if it has been discussed before).

But this site is much more of an online community now. Big online communities have the issues that this one is having - naturally. There are thousands upon thousands of members. There will be disagreements. There will be people that feel some 'ownership' of the site since they've been around for a long time, and don't tolerate vociferous newcomers. There are people that get a thrill out of arguing or stirring up trouble. There are people who hide behind the relative anonymity of an online persona, and act in ways that they would never act in real life. All of this combined is what makes this site what it is...

In my prior post, I pointed out that the tone of the site used to be different. And in a lot of ways, that was more desirable, but that was then and this is now. Revel in the what it has become. This site is a wonderful resource. A good way to communicate with people that you share interests with. But it's also just a website. Don't let yourself get too worked up over it!

So hold onto your pipes, and let's have some fun, shall we?

Pete

Re: Any memorable discussions?

Thank you, I shall definately hold on to them tightly, Rev.
('Twas mere exaggeration to add emphasis, as I suspect you knew, sir.)

Your points are well-taken, and logical. I willingly confess I am letting my personal views on other aspects of life on Earth creep in. I simply think that the more we act like savages in one area of activity, the more it affects other areas, so I am often guilty of screaming in the wilderness for people to show some respect for each other.

I know I am not privy to other members history with each other, but I can only respond based upon what I read here, and, being all too human, how I personally have been treated.

I think we can do better as evolved humans than spitting venom at each other, rather than reasoning and using the brains our creator gave us.

My two cents, post inflation.

Cheers.

>>> so I am often guilty of screaming in the wilderness for people to show some respect for each other.

I would love to see that too! Unfortunately, you can scream until you're hoarse, and some people won't listen.

But I think if you learn to filter some of the chaff, you will find that a lot of the people on this site truly do show respect for each other, not just as musicians, but as human beings.

>>> My two cents, post inflation.

Wow, you're opinion is now worth 8.2ยข ;-)

Re: Any memorable discussions?

I for one will remember this discusssion.
At least Mr. Gill stayed a bit longer than he did previously.
Conversely, Michael, if you state your facts with overdue emphasis many will distrust your opinion.
Whether speaking with people or playing music ~ each is an artform. Truth is rare & elusive.
