I know this has been mentioned before, but personally I'd like to see this site grow to include actual audio files of the tunes, submitted by users. Since this is supposed to be an aural tradition, this makes more sense than having only the sheet music and MIDIs. In my dream version of thesession.org I'd be able to click a tune's "download" tab, and in addition to the ABC and MIDI files, I will see links to mp3s of the tune along with the member who recorded the clip. Maybe a popular tune will have several submissions of different variations and different instruments. This way I could actually hear what a tune sounds like, instead of the ambiguous MIDI (though the MIDI is still better than nothing). Perhaps links to youtube videos of the tune could be conveniently indexed there as well.
I am a relative newcomer to this forum, but I understand there once was a project called the Mighty Crack, in which users recorded their playing and posted clips online so others could hear. In reading through the old thread, I see that this website is no longer available. What happened?
Is bandwidth really an issue? I could be off the mark, but a quick search shows web hosting companies that offer 3 gigabytes of disk space and 30 gigs bandwidth for something like $7 per month. And an mp3 does not have to be a huge file. For our purpose, the clips could even be saved with a bitrate of 16kbps instead of the usual 128kbps. I have converted files this way using Audacity, and (while it certainly loses a lot of quality) you can still hear the details just fine, with the result that a one minute recording could be as small as 120KB.
I am interested in knowing what others think. And I might be willing to volunteer some of my time to convert and organize the files or buy the webspace if it is a good idea.
Re: We call this "The Session" but I can't hear you.
A lot of it is here.
I haven't had time to download all the tunes yet since each one needs a form manually filling out (and I'm moving house and changing jobs at the same time).
Re: We call this "The Session" but I can't hear you.
Darn. I was about to turn in. One last look at thesession. Got the above link. I will be up a while longer listening to those clips. Great site!! Thanks, bc.
Re: We call this "The Session" but I can't hear you.
Silverbow, I am sure lots of people do agree with you about tune recordings but I think that it is up to people to record and post to a place where the mp3 can be hosted and then put the link in the comments section for that tune.
I think that it is too much to expect Jeremy to change the way this is set up for now, with all the extra work and cost that would be involved in integrating this (mp3's) into the present site. Maybe you could start by advising people as to where the cheapest (?free) mp3 hosting facility might be and get the trend going.
Re: We call this "The Session" but I can't hear you.
I like the idea, but appreciate the problems that might arise.
I belong to a website (full membership requires an annual fee of £7.00) We had until recently Classical/Jazz/Pops and Light music Threads where somebody would ask for a particular song or tune and other members would post it on site. You could then play it and download if necessary. Unfortunately those Threads were close due to copyright whatsits,, Pity really.
Re: We call this "The Session" but I can't hear you.
Reference my last post. The very last tune that was allowed on the Music Threads before they closed was ..The Birdy Song.
Just thought you'd like to know the sort of company I keep.
Re: We call this "The Session" but I can't hear you.
Each tune on ezFolk has an embedded player feature that will allow anyone to place the tune anywhere on the Internet that will accept the code by simply copying and pasting. I would think the player from Eno's pages there could be embedded into the comments section of the tune listing here. I'm not an expert in these things, hell I'm not even a novice, but it seems to me that the bandwidth use then would be ezFolk's and not this site's.
Whilst on the subject of ezFolk.com I highly recommend the site, its owner, and its mission. We've been on it for some time now. It is extremely easy to use both as an artist as well as listener.
Re: We call this "The Session" but I can't hear you.
Hi Ed.... I didn't know that! Will try it! Not here, at my website for experiment!
EZ folk is very good... for now I have a link from our site directing to the EZFolk page. It is very easy to use... If I could set it up, anyone could!

"I think that it is too much to expect Jeremy to change the way this is set up for now, with all the extra work and cost that would be involved in integrating this (mp3's) into the present site."
What extra work and cost would be involved? An mp3 is just a file like any other file. I can't imagine it would be that much work to add an mp3 tab to the tunes template.
Re: We call this "The Session" but I can't hear you.
I never met Jeremy but I think he is working plenty hard.
He prepares the sheet music & MIDI for each tune. If posters' wish to submit a mp3 (even now) they can provide a link to EZ Folk under the 'Tune Comments' tab. Also, the recording(s) would not be limited to the person submitting the tune.
Point is ~ what you are asking for exists. Running TheSession with Jeremy's direction might work out better than trying to direct the webmaster. Please click on those 'Comments'
another fun thing would be for someone to pick a tune in the the database and "challenge" someone else to learn the tune and upload a version.
i think this might be a nice way for people to stretch their skills.
Re: We call this "The Session" but I can't hear you.
i forgot to say...
if you want to share a tune using lightningmp3, type in your email address and select the mp3 you want to upload, from your computer.
once its uploaded, you get an email with a link to the mp3.
you can post this anywhere you want.
Re: We call this "The Session" but I can't hear you.
If you have a website you can upload mp3s there. Then you can add a link in a comment on the relevant tune.
Or you could use that lightningmp3.com site. Either way, as long as the mp3 is online somewhere, all you need to do is put the URL in a comment on a tune.

This site is brilliant because it is so simple and uncluttered. It's the best thing on the web, just as it is.

Re: We call this "The Session" but I can't hear you.
i regularly visit an electronic music site.

people there are always sharing tunes and giving each other advice, tips and ideas.
i think it would be nice here as well.
anyone looking to share music could use:
http://lightningmp3.com
in the meantime.
im up for loading up some dodgy banjo.
another fun thing would be for someone to pick a tune in the the database and "challenge" someone else to learn the tune and upload a version.

Re: We call this "The Session" but I can't hear you.
Lightningmp3 looks great.
The link is for uploads. Where do you listen (download)? & why do these sites use only QuickTime?

Re: We call this "The Session" but I can't hear you.
the site works ok for me when i use the mozilla firefox browser.
they open in quicktime. but you can download them as well.
just go up to "save page as" in yer file menu.
I dont know who runs that site btw.
I seem to find myself frequently posting links to it here. haha.
i just like to point out that they are ways and means of sharing music without too much hassle.
