Flute for sale?

Flute for sale?

My daughter is starting band this year and is going to give the flute a try. Any suggestions as to a resonably priced student flute and does anybody have one for sale?

Re: Flute for sale?

Depends what sort of flute. Classical (silver, with lots of levers and stuff) or Traditional (just a stick with some holes in)?

Re: Flute for sale?

Classical. The traditional Irish simple flute was not on the list. I am in Texas and just glad they have/teach band.
Here it appears the soul purpose of band is to support the football teams.

Re: Flute for sale?

Or *really* traditional - a conical wooden tube with keys. The keyless "Irish" flute is a great thing, but it's only been around for a 20 or 30 years (or so).

Re: Flute for sale?

I love the internet. It's such a strange anarchic thing. Some wifey in Texas wants to get her niece a flute so she can be a cheer leader for the local football (not soccer by the way) team. And she asks for advice here. I'm just glad that the rest of the world bumps into us now and then. Just to remind us that they are there.

Re: Flute for sale?

Look for a yamaha flute. They are well-made and not too expensive. Easy to find on the Internet.

Re: Flute for sale?

I see you have met my colleagues. It would be worthwhile to find a shop where you can actually see & hear the flute before buying one. Any of the major cities will have a music store where you can rent a flute with the option to buy. Not a bad option for a student just getting started. What about a flute instructor? They might know who has a flute for sale.

Re: Flute for sale?

Are you called after the band that featured Jerry Garcia on banjo?

Re: Flute for sale?

sbhikes is right- go for Yamaha or Gemeinhardt. AVOID AT ALL COSTS a flute by First Act or Band Now- they are good for stirring paint or propping up window sashes.

Try the catalog at Woodwind and Brasswind www.wwbw.com

Re: Flute for sale?

Well in fact I did lift the name from that great group of players, but the moniker goes more to the way I have been feeling for awhile. I past the half century mark a few months ago and I have a couple of young kids (15 & 12) at home and at times I do feel old and in the way.
The reason for my inquiry about the flute. I was hoping that someone who had abandon classical flute in favor of simple flute might have one lying around that they wanted to get rid of (turn into money). I know this is not a clearing house site for instruments but thought it worth a try.
My daughter heard Phil Cummingham's tune "When Summer Ends" off of the Ken Burns civil war documentry and liked the flute playing. She has the talent/ear for music and I am trying to encourage that.
The only available instruction is through the local school that teaches band. I was attempting some sarcasm with reference to the local football culture here.

Re: Flute for sale?

Must you musicians maintain your own separate reality forever? I shudder each time I see a cheap flute come out of the case. A free falling window sash is a hazard & a flute is not the proper remedy! Sash cords & window balancers can be easily replaced.
BTW you are probably right about someone having a flute laying about. I have 3 silver flutes (I will pull the one out of the window tonight & see if it still plays good enough). You might try your tactic on Chiff & Fipple.

Re: Flute for sale?

Just so you know, there is no such thing as a "student model" flute. A flute is a flute. You can tart it up in all manner of ways, but there is nothing that distinguishes one flute from another in any material way except whether or not it plays. Your best bet is to get an experienced player to hit the pawn shops with you. If the keys don't leak and move easily, there is little else to worry about. There is better and worse in anything you buy, of course, but I have a flute I bought second-hand (certified pre-owned?) for $50 that plays as well as my solid-silver Armstrong flute that would probably retail for about $1,500 today. It's not as refined, but who cares? You can get refinement later on, if she loves flute. Right now, you want a good instrument, and when it comes to flute, there's plenty out there. But the most important thing is to get whatever you think you might buy verified by an experienced player. That's all that matters, so don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Re: Flute for sale?

old & in the way ~ I take it you do not have a regular session near you ~ so I have to ask . . . do you know "an experienced (flute) player to hit the pawn shops"?
