The Largest Session in the World!

The Largest Session in the World!

Friday, Aug 24 in O'Connor Square, Tullamore, following the parade (which starts at 7pm).

The tune and set list is here (all from Foinn Seisiun I):

It seems to be an attempt at a world record. I never knew there was a world record for session size. Ya learn something new every day.

It's..."set to rock Tullamore"?

Well...can't fault them for enthusiasm, I suppose : \

Re: The Largest Session in the World!

Sounds like a hoot! Though I'm not *awfully* upset about missing it.

Re: The Largest Session in the World!

Count me in although I'd like to know which end the Bodhrán players are going to be positioned!

Re: The Largest Session in the World!

PS Is it confined strictly to straight trad instruments or can I bring along my sax if it's not raining?

Re: The Largest Session in the World!

Bannerman, with 2000 other musicians, the sax probably won't be heard, so you are safe enough. Have you mastered playing it at the same time as the fiddle ?

Re: The Largest Session in the World!

This is the third thread this week about the Fleadh. This is actually good news as in previous years there have been next to none!

Re: The Largest Session in the World!

Oh my God I can't for the life of me think of The Red Haired Lass....How does it go? And I think I'll play Rollin' in the Rye Grass instead of The Shannon Breeze. That should throw the whole thing into confusion.

Re: The Largest Session in the World!

sounds like a mad idea but I'm going to be there! All those tunes can be heard on the Comhaltas website, but if some people are muddling through some of them they're never going to be heard with this crowd anyway. Bring the sax Bannerman, why not add some variety!

Re: The Largest Session in the World!

You haven't heard me on the sax Cathy as I've gotten a bit rusty having a repertoire that includes "Hoots Man there's a moose loose aboot this hoose" by Lord Rockingham's Eleven, Telstar and a range of Duane Eddy tunes (oops I've given away my age!) - not really the stuff you'd find in Foinn Seisiún. As for playing the fiddle and sax together, I might give it a go but the tenor sax is tuned to B flat which would lead to a bit of dissonance.

Re: The Largest Session in the World!

Bannerman -- "as for playing the fiddle and sax together"? Don't we have enough sax and violins ...

I think Boys of Bluehill would sound just perfect on the sax. Or tuba. In fact, now I can't get the sound out of my head. Aaiiiiieeeee!

And why not play a sax in a session? You can play one in the Fleadh. Surely this is why the Miscellaneous Instrument category was created.

Re: The Largest Session in the World!

If there's a set tune list, then surely it's not a session - it's a performance.

Re: The Largest Session in the World!

Mind you in this case I can't think of an alternative to a "tune list" - imagine trying to shout the name of the next tune to 2000 people!
