What's the name of our band?

What's the name of our band?

We are mulling over a name, and I thought I would share a few, with the hope of good advice, or maybe a winner. There are 5 of us (me on Flute -- also have a fiddler, singer, guitar, and other person). This is kind of urgent, we have a gig, but can't do the paperwork until we have a name.

Here are a few we came up with:

James Joyce's Refugees.
The Keltones.
The Eighth Note Addicts.
Lester's Fancy
Sonic Craic

and because we were getting drunk...

Rebecca McTroon and the Pocan Dos
Dis-association
Escape from Dargans
The Bog Tones

and because we were getting silly...

Unscheduled
Performance Cancelled
TBA

Thanks so much for your feedback!

Re: What's the name of our band?

Actually, I like the name "Sven Fjord the Viking and How He Grew". Maybe I'll name my future band that....

Re: What's the name of our band?

You could always try the web sites listed here, if you want to give yourself nightmares:

http://dir.yahoo.com/Entertainment/Music/Band_Naming/

Two of my groups were lucky because a witty remark at the right time stuck and became a good name but with a third group, nothing "sat" quite right and it dragged on for ages. We had a spreadsheet with about 300 names in it, and a protracted voting process, and narrowed it down to one name... which we then decided we didn't like anyway!

We ended up using our own "internal nickname" for the band which had been rejected at first but, after all the trauma, didn't seem so bad after all. It was the only thing that would really "stick" and didn't feel... "inorganic" to us, for want of a better term.

Let's know what you settle on!

Re: What's the name of our band?

two years ago i was been in the south of italy with the band
and we sow an advertising poster of a pub with the writing "BIRRA GRATIS" ( = free beer).
Obviously we gone to that pub.
Well, "Birra Gratis" was yhe name of the ITM band that was playing in the pub!!
Great Name!! with a name like this the succes is assured.

Re: What was the name of our band?

Our band (nameless at the time) ran a folk club and made a temporary stage out of beer crates and an old agricultural sign. The sign proclaimed "Silade for better silage" - our name and catch-phrase was thus born - "You've heard the silage, now here's Silade".
After 20 odd years we still have a Silade reunion band.

Re: What's the name of our band?

Referring back to Gian Marco's suggestion, I saw a pub (in Glasgow, I think it was) with 'Free Beer Tomorrow' painted over the door. Ha ha! It kind of has a tragic philosophical undercurrent, don't you think? I'm sure it would be quite confusing on posters and flyers, though...

Band name choice can be a horrendous process. A friend of mine found herself in a band called Gigglestick and the Love Truncheons, which she was never too delighted about... poor girl...

Folk and traditional bands seem to be particularly blighted by bad puns, I must say. Folksters and Tradsters in general must have a tendency to suffer from Obsessive Compulsive Punning Syndrome. I wonder if it's related to Tune Obsession Disorder?

Re: What's the name of our band?

Thanks!

I gather this question was not taken too seriously, which is a good thing.

Would you go to see a concert headlined by "The Keltones?"

It was my favorite 8-)

Then again, we're not very good (yet).

Re: What's the name of our band?

Taking it a little more seriously, then... 8>)

FWIW, IMHO, of the names you originally listed, The Keltones and Lester's Fancy roll off the tongue most easily (a name that's clumsy to pronounce doesn't seem to be a good idea) but I wonder if there are enough well-known bands in other fields called the Xtones (Delltones, Flecktones, etc) that it might give the impression you're a pop/jazz/something-other-than-trad band? Without knowing the group, the name "The Keltones" wouldn't conjure up a trad band picture in my mind, whereas Lester's Fancy might. But of course that might be just the way my brain is wired and wouldn't matter anyway if the publicity makes it obvious what sort of music you play.

Re: What's the name of our band?

If you're really not very good, and want to be humerous about it, I like the "Bogtones" or "Bog Standards" the best.
In fact I'm rushing to get the patents right now. Contact me soon about the above names if you decide to go that direction, I will be accepting paypal.

We met tonight to rehearse and came up with ...

"Happy Hour"

This has a double meaning, because at "Lark in the Morning Camp" each year there is a session called "Happy Hour" that many of us play at.

What do you think?

"the purple-headed warriors?"

Re: What's the name of our band?

Oh, now Celtic - Purple headed warriors - I believe they are still mass-debating over that one.

As a last resort, there's always:

Mike Hunt with the Hares

Then fans can go round saying:

'Have you seen "Mike Hunt with the Hares" ?'

Re: Cop this!

The worst pun-ishment must be a group of shantyman in the UK called "The Voice Squad".

# Posted on March 3rd 2003 by geoffwright

Voice Squad

Are they UKish, Geoff? I thought they were from Dublin - at least the sleeve notes on "Bringing it all back home" would indicate - but that could be intentionally duplitious to save them from the "plastic paddy" label.
I thought it was quite an amusing name in a sort of way, especially said with a Dub accent.

The name of our band

For those who followed the discussion on the naming of our band, we have a winner.

Gananam.

Look for us in 3 years, between Gananan and Gananal, in the record shop near you.

Re: What's the name of our band?

Geoff, for some reason I always thought these guys, 'The Voice Squad', were from Belfast!

If so, I'd be careful what I called them ;-)

http://www.taramusic.com/biogs/vsquad.htm

Must admit I've always enjoyed their harmony singing of trad songs - (oops - Am I allowed to say that here, I wonder?

Aw sh*t, I never did believe in pigeon holes anyway - even for pigeons!

If you haven't heard the Voice Squad before, & are wondering whether you would like to hear your favourite trad songs 'harmoginized' - here are a few clips to help you make up your mind:
