Pride of the West, John Wynne and John McEvoy

Pride of the West, John Wynne and John McEvoy

If you have not got this cd you should! It is fantastic. I haven't had a cd like this in ages that I listen to contstantly. The last one like this was 'Within a mile of Dublin' by Grattan and O Shaughnessy, This one is every bit as good as that.

The tunes are fantastic, extroardinary playing and beautifully together, accompanied by Arty McGlynn, what could be better?

It is billed as North Connacht music ie Roscommon, which is my home place, I had never thought of myself being from North Connacht but there you go.

The music is fantastic but it is really interesting for two reasons. Throughout it is really happy music, unqualifiedly happy. Anyone who has been there knows that our countryside is really bleak, though beautful. Its strange to think how this very tough environment has produced music of such humour and tenderness.

The other interesting thing is on this cd they play a lot of music which is more usually associated with Donegal music, but is actually, it would appear, Roscommon music, or common to both traditions.

Funny that, I must raise this with my old mate Pilib O'Conchubhair next time I see him

They appeared on the Late Session around a week ago: http://www.rte.ie/radio1/thelatesession/1121129.html

This recording has been on my wish list, but I'm running out of money now. I'm listening to John and Catherine's duet album as a substitute.

Not really a discussion, though, is it? Should post comments like this here :

I'll be buying one on Sunday.

Well, I would have thought: comments on an excellent recording, the relationship between the land and the cultural expression of a people, and the realtionship between Roscommon and Donegal music were all subjects for a discussion. Obvious, now, I was wrong

As far as I'm concerned, you were right, Pól. Keep 'em coming.

Re: Pride of the West, John Wynne and John McEvoy

I picked this up in HMV about a week or two ago. I was very surprised to find it there. I didn't make any hesitation. Without even hearing a sample track, I bought it. I knew I wasn't going to be disappointed, and, well, indeed I wasn't. One of my favorites. If you like the album John did with his sister Catherine, you'll love this.

Well one of us is wrong, and I'm afraid I don't see any fault in my logic. What's wrong with discussing a recording in the recordings section ?

Re: Pride of the West, John Wynne and John McEvoy

This appears then not to be as obvious as I thought it was.

I am not discussing it simply as a recording. I am interested in its broader significance, its links with other apects of our culture
