Fans of Sliabh Luachra music and Kerry music in general will be sad to hear of the passing of box player, Dennis Doody, last Wednesday.
His health wasn´t good in recent years and he hadn´t been playing much.
Dennis, who lived in Shannon, was, as well as a fine musician, an authority on the music of Sliabh Luachra and gave many lectures and workshops on the subject.
A nicer person you couldn´t meet. he was a true gentleman and happy to share his music with everyone.
May he Rest in Peace.
A gentle man, a fine person who also happened to be a generous and inspirational musician. Dennis is the source for one of the examples I often mention with regards to names for tunes. When pressed by those producing his album, to name the un-named, and there were a lot, he gave in and came up with a bunch of names for those gan ainms. Later he faced the frustration of remembering which were which when people started making requests using those invented titles.
While I love the music and dance, it has never been the most important aspect of tradition I appeciate and love, Dennis represented the complete package ~ a fine character, an open and generous heart, humorous, informed, appreciative and supportive of others ~ and a damned fine dance musician as well...
His solo album remains one of my essential desert island discs. Having had the pleasure of encountering Dennis on a number of occasions passing through Shannon after bleary eyed flights his wink and a nod will never be forgotten. Top bloke.

I love Denis Doody's Polka. It is a great tune.
