Musicians wanted for new session (Bolton/Bury)

Musicians wanted for new session (Bolton/Bury)

Anyone interested in joining a new session in the Bolton / Bury area of Lancashire.
We have only been going for a few months and have a tune book of about 25 - 30 tunes comprising of airs, jigs, polkas etc.
we have me on whistles, a guitarist, mandolin, bodhran etc.
at the moment we meet at eachothers houses on various nights each week, and would more than welcome new musicians.
the only `criteria` is NO show offs ! and a willingness to learn the tunes and contribute to the session.
and if you want to include `your` tunes to our ever growing book, it helps if you bring us the dots and chords - so we can all learn them ! oh and we don`t really need any improvisation, we just want to learn trad and play it well.
the session, if we get enough interest, will be moving to a local pub.

cheers

Gosh, I hope, ex-Radcliffe man that I am, that you get some replies! I'd be right with you but unfortunately I moved away in 1969! Good luck. :-)

Re: Musicians wanted for new session (Bolton/Bury)

Why don't you get down to the Bolton Session. 3rd Sunday in the month at Bolton Irish club? They are very welcoming and would be pleased to see new blood.

Re: Musicians wanted for new session (Bolton/Bury)

I'm in Darwen and would be interested in joining a session.

I currently go to the Haslingden session with Bill who posted above.

As Bill says, have a you got a tune list and venue?

Re: Musicians wanted for new session (Bolton/Bury)

In the process of sorting venue and more important a night that don`t clash too much with other well established sessions, the Towler pub mentioned above is a strong contender. will post the venue and dates on this site in next week or so.

We may well have a trip over to the Bolton Irish centre when we are good enough !

Our tune list looks a little like this;
(any comments/imput/ideas are very welcome)

set 1
For Ireland I will not tell her name (aire) /
Merrily kissed the quaker
set 2
The lilting fisherman / the blackthorn stick
set 3
Britches full of stitches / Julia Cliffords polka
set 4
The friendly visit / Off to California
set 5
Boys of Bluehill / Harvest home
set 6
The Killavil jig / The lilting banshee
set 7
Planxty Irwin / Planxty Fanny Power / Give me your hand

O`Keefes
Hector the hero
Sheebeg and Sheemore
Inisheer
Wind that shakes the barley
Maggie in the woods

Dirty old town/wild rover/Irish rover/whiskey in the jar etc etc
(singer required !!)

currently working on Cooley`s, St.Annes reel, Londonderry hornpipe and a few others.

I suspect we need a lot more tunes and musicians to make a night of it ?

Any suggestions would be a big help !!!!!!!!!!!

will post mp3s of what we sound like in the very near future.

the main thing is that we find musicians willing to learn, practice, contribute, help and have a good time in the process !
and we want to play the tunes as well as possible and keep the tradition alive.

I`m about to go off on one about us all being custodians of the music and having a duty to look after and pass on the tradition, so I will leave it at that for now................

Tony

Re: Musicians wanted for new session (Bolton/Bury)

As well as setting up a session you may find it worthwhile getting over to the Haslingden session.

It's run on a Wednesday night in the Irish Club from 7.

It was set up about 8 months ago for beginners so most people there are have that sort of experience. It covers quite a few of the tunes you have already learnt. It's very friendly and and is a guided session that's run by a guy with vast experience in Irish music and an absolute passion for keeping the music alive.

I think you'd enjoy it.

Darwen eh? Gosh, I passed through there a couple of weeks ago just to check that they were looking after your wonderful campanile. Great tune list there, Tony. At least I know I'll be able to join in if I'm ever around!
