Mrs Galvin - torrent available

Mrs Galvin - torrent available

As a result of many requests I've submitted a torrent of the fiddle playing of Mrs Ellen Galvin to Mininova - you can find the link at http://www.mininova.org/tor/730902.

I'm new to the torrent submission game, so I hope this works.

The torrent consists of 31 tracks of her fiddle playing, none of which have been named (because I haven't had the time to do so) and a very early cylinder recording, c. 1909, of the uilleann piper Edward Cronin. All tracks are out of copyright in the UK and Ireland.

If the torrent works, I'd be very grateful if someone else were to take on the seeding role as I'm moving to Ireland shortly and won't have broadband for some considerable time, courtesy of those lovely folk at Eircom. If the torrent doesn't work, please do let me know.

ATB,

Geoff

Re: Mrs Galvin - torrent available

My torrent client seems to find it, but doesn't download anything. I know the client is working, as it's downloading other stuff. But I don't know enough about torrents to diagnose any faults!

Re: Mrs Galvin - torrent available

Often you have to wait a while for new torrents to be recognized. I've checked the torrent file with both uTorrent and Bitcomet and both recognize it as valid.

Re: Mrs Galvin - torrent available

Would one of you kindly explain about torrents please?
Thanks

Re: Mrs Galvin - torrent available

I'll leave it ticking and see what happens.
At the moment, it's telling me 0 seeds and 2 peers. (20:28 BST)

Re: Mrs Galvin - torrent available

Same here, my torrent client finds the files but shows as stalled in the download process. I even tried just down loading tracks 1 through 10 and got the same results.

I'm using a linux os and KTorrent is the client.

Peace,
Ed

Re: Mrs Galvin - torrent available

i'm on it too, but no joy at all ... nothing, no seeds no peers. Hmmm. Have you uploaded the full file? Are you still seeding it?

Re: Mrs Galvin - torrent available

Seems like this might be better served on yousendit.

Re: Mrs Galvin - torrent available

In order for a torrent to work (as I understand it) the person providing it has to leave their torrent client on for a while... At least long enough for other people to get enough of the file.

I'm certainly no authority on how torrents work, but my understanding was something like this. If you have a large file, say a 1000 page book of your tune compositions, and you want to share it you set up your torrent client to serve (seed) out that file, and leave it running for several hours, then roughly the following ensues:

1) 10 people (peers) show up and want copies, so your client copies the first 10 pages to the first person, pages 11-20 to the second, and so on.

2) over the course of the next several minutes/hours the 10 peers each copy the sections they got from you, and pass them around to each other.

3) As long as all the pieces are available out there, anybody else can join in the page-copying frenzy and get/share out the book themselves.

But if the only two people in the world who have some piece of the book turn off their clients (no longer seeding one page, for instance), then nobody can get that page, and nobody else can get the whole book until somebody with that piece of the book fires up their client and starts seeding it.

So, while popular torrents (like racy episodes of "Big Brother") are seeded up the wazoo without anybody really needing to worry, less popular torrents like Miss Galvin won't be available unless there's enough of the file being seeded.

So, Geoff... Turn your client back on, please!

Re: Mrs Galvin - torrent available

yes, that's the story Georgi. Some one with the full file needs to seed or the torrent is useless and will remain so. There are three of us leeching at the moment but seeing as we've not been able to get any data we can't even share amongst ourselves. Geoff, you need to upload at least 73.3 mb, not just the torrent - you need to be connected to the torrent as a seed. Once I've got the full file I'm happy to seed it for a while - even for ages.

Cheers.

Re: Mrs Galvin - torrent available

Yep - I'll grab it and seed for a long time too as I'm a fevered downloading maniac. There's no-one at all on it right now though (12 noon GMT). Let me know if you're having troubles Geoff - I've been using torrents for a fair while now.

Re: Mrs Galvin - torrent available

hahaha ... a fevered downloading maniac! Another one! I like to hear it. I'll stick this on soulseek too once I've got it - a great way of getting loads of trad music (and much more besides) if you didn't already know.

This torrent is working now btw, it's slow for the moment, but it's working. Just remember to upload as much as you download and it'll be fine.

I am not sure what a torrent is but nothing seems to be happening ?

Re: Mrs Galvin - torrent available

do you have torrent software installed?

# Posted on June 1st 2007 by tnoumarap

Re: Mrs Galvin - torrent available

The torrent is definitely working, but I don't leave my computer on 24/7 so, if you're across the pond, please remember that when you're trying to download I might be happily lying in bed dreaming of Forest winning the European Cup for the third time. One can but dream.

Anyway, here's another one for you - http://www.mininova.org/tor/732169. Cathal McConnell and Tommy Peoples recorded live in the 1980s, I think. It's a small file - 28Mb - so, hopefully, someone will be able to take over the seeding rapidly.

Re: Mrs Galvin - torrent available

well, first off you need to install a client - like utorrent (google it, it's downloadable for free), then open the torrent file that you download from mininova with the client, that will then download the stuff you want. If you've got a router to connect your pc to the net then you need to involve yourself in the wonderful world of portforwarding - sounds worse than it is. A step by step walkthrough of what to do can be found here:

http://www.portforward.com/store/pfconfig.htm

Once that's done all should be fine and dandy - but, oh yes, make sure your firewall isn't blocking the client (utorrent, bitcomet or whatever). Hope that helps.

# Posted on June 1st 2007 by pavlf

Re: Mrs Galvin - torrent available

actually, I've just looked at my utorrent and a few of those downloading form me (seem to be residents of the good ol us of a) seem to be quite remiss in uploading. Torrents only work if you upload too :-)

# Posted on June 1st 2007 by pavlf

Re: Mrs Galvin - torrent available

Argh, dead at 37.3%. I vote for the yousendit.com option if anyone with the whole thing feels like putting it up... I am dying to hear this stuff!

FWIW, I looked at my stats and although my client is set to upload as well, my uploaded amount is 0, so either nobody downloaded anything from me, or there is some firewall beyond me preventing it. I have no idea.

# Posted on June 1st 2007 by wbajzek

Re: Mrs Galvin - torrent available

Oh, this is utterly ridiculous! The torrent is certainly not dead, wbajzek, and there are clearly people downloading it who seem not to have realized that others might want to share the files (and all of these miscreants are in the US!).

Doesn't that say a lot about the current state of the world?

# Posted on June 1st 2007 by MacCruiskeen

Re: Mrs Galvin - torrent available

Well, I was able to resume the upload, but my client had told me that the torrent was lost and (until I realized I could tell it to resume) it had reset back to 0%... Hence my assumption that it was "dead." In the meantime, I have supposedly been receiving 1KB/s but my computer is nearly unresponsive due to the network traffic. Next time I'll try a different client, but not until this torrent's done downloading.

Anyway, I appreciate that you posted this and I am looking forward to finally downloading it all... I am just thinking that maybe bittorrent's not ideal for something of such low demand. It needs critical mass to be really effective.

# Posted on June 1st 2007 by wbajzek

Re: Mrs Galvin - torrent available

Let me say that again, I REALLY appreciate that you are trying to make this material available; I have heard bits of it an am really eager to hear the rest. I don't wish to discourage you from doing this, really!

Re: Mrs Galvin - torrent available

this is fantastic music! Thanks a milion! It's brilliant.

I'm now seeding the file and will continue to do so for as long as I can. It might be intermittent, so if no one is seeding it I'm sure to turn up on it at some point.

Winamp plays the files fine.

Thre are quite enought people in this torrent to make it work fine. Get it while it's hot!!!!

Cheers Geoff. Great stuff.

# Posted on June 1st 2007 by pavlf

Re: Mrs Galvin - torrent available

I've got it all now, thanks Geoff!
Haven't had a chance to listen yet (probably tomorrow) but will continue seeding as long as my client is running (which is a lot).

Slainte!

Here are my guesses...
1) Banish Misfortune
5) Delia Crowley's
8) Mrs Galvin's
9) Fisher's Hornpipe
11) Old Hag You've Killed Me
13) ??? (Same as 4) / Wild Irishman
16) Sporting Nell

Re: Mrs Galvin - torrent available

I have it all now too - and will seed for a few weeks, generally between 1600 and 1000 GMT (while I'm asleep or at work) and maybe other times. If there's nobody on when you try it, just leave your client running - it will pick it up eventually. BTW I use the client Azureus which is very stable and recommended by most of the sites. Off to grab the other one now - thanks v much Geoff.

Re: Mrs Galvin - torrent available

ah I'm lost! How do you do all this stuff????

# Posted on June 2nd 2007 by concertinaplayer

Re: Mrs Galvin - torrent available

concertina player: first you need to download and install utorrent (google it). Then you need to go to the link above, look for the download this torrent option on the page, then it will ask if you want to save it or open it, I choose open it and choose to open it with utorrent. You could save it and then open it later with utorrent. Then utorrent will start downloading the files. It might take a few hours, depends upon how many people are uploading.

If you have a router you will need to do some port forwarding, I left a link with instructions on how to do that above. Actually the answers to all of this are available all over the net, just use google. That's what I did.

Good luck.

# Posted on June 2nd 2007 by pavlf

Re: Mrs Galvin - torrent available

I'm still seeding both, but I appear to be the only one who is - people must keep their Torrent client running after they've got it all, otherwise the system doesn't work.

# Posted on June 2nd 2007 by Martin_BC

Re: Mrs Galvin - torrent available

Thanks pavif.Having just tried and got lost in the midst of portforwarding, will just have to accept that am not too good at this stuff.

# Posted on June 2nd 2007 by concertinaplayer

Re: Mrs Galvin - torrent available

i'm still seeding!

Concertina player ... persevere! It isn't that hard, really! First you need a pen and paper, follow the instructions on creating a static ip address fro your pc, write it down, then follow the instructions for utorrent and then for your router. Here's a link on how to setup a static ip

http://forums.bitcomet.com/index.php?showtopic=3880

hope it helps! It's worth it, the music is great.

Re: Mrs Galvin - torrent available

OK pavif. With your encouragement I have tried again and all going well. Have reached stage where I have clicked on the selection of bitcomet. The page now tell me that it needs to know what port bitcomet is using and says go ahead and open bitcomet. Now lost !! How do I open bitcomet- I know I know. I.m not great!!

# Posted on June 2nd 2007 by concertinaplayer

Re: Mrs Galvin - torrent available

ok. Have you downlaoded and installed bitcomet? Bitcomet and Utorrent are both just programs that allow you to download the data. There are lots of other ones. So google bitcomet (seeing as the advice you're following relates to that one you may as well use it for now), download and install it. Then follow the 'go ahead' advice!

Ask again if you get stuck!

# Posted on June 2nd 2007 by pavlf

Re: Mrs Galvin - torrent available

Yep, all this is great - glad I can distribute the music to welcoming ears. However, I'm still miffed that 8 people who downloaded the whole set of files have not bothered to seed the tracks so that others can share them more rapidly. Come on, this is all about sharing!

The files were converted to MP3 using Acoustica. All work fine for me and for other people to whom I've previously sent the tracks as MP3 format CDs.

Re: Mrs Galvin - torrent available

I'm downloading it now, thank you to whoever is seeding it at the moment and to Geoff.

# Posted on June 2nd 2007 by tnoumarap

Re: Mrs Galvin - torrent available

My client (bitrocket on the Mac) says it's seeding now, has been for 24hours, and will for quite a while yet.
I watched it for a while, and sometimes it uploads some data - but not very often.

Re: Mrs Galvin - torrent available

I think there are some glitches in the way the mininova tracker reports seeds/leeches - I've noticed this with other torrents from there too. It's a huge setup and maybe is running in some distributed form. For those who have the patience to work their way in to it, there's a UK-based torrent site at oink.me.uk which is invite/members only, which maintains really high standards in share ratios and quality of files uploaded. Almost anything you've ever heard of can be found there, although I think that ITM is less well-represented than most other genres.

While some files/albums might be original or copyright-free, obviously many are not. The ethical/legal decisions remain for each individual to make. Good luck!

Re: Mrs Galvin - torrent available

Hi Martin X - can you invite me to join oink.me? Open registration is now closed apparently. I'll PM you my email if you don't mind.

Re: Mrs Galvin - torrent available

Good morning, afternoon and good night ladies and gentlemen. Please accept my appologies for ressurecting this older thread but it is of great concern to me that I attain these files. If anyone can assist in this matter please let me know. I have had bittorrent running for 20 hours now in the hopes that they would come online but alas, no.

Re: Mrs Galvin - torrent available

Could some of you seed this again so I can get it? I'd really appreciate it. If not possible, could we work out some other way to at least share parts of the recording?
