Re: Dingle session tune.

Correct Mick, preceded by The Wind that Shakes the Barley:

played by Liam og O'Flynn. As for the hornpipe...is that the Banks?

Re: Dingle session tune.

No, not the banks...hmmm I know those two...

Re: Dingle session tune.

Thanks for your help, the Derry Hornpipe it is.
Next on my to learn list.

Re: Dingle session tune.

They sneak a bit of another hornpipe in there, I think, then go back to the Derry. That other one sounds tantalizingly familiar, but I can't put a name to it.

Re: Dingle session tune.

At about 6:22--Lad O'Beirnes, maybe?

Re: Dingle session tune.

I think 6:22 is the start of the fourth part, the last part on the video version.
http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display/3250
has 6 parts, more than enough.

Re: Dingle session tune.

Thanks, Lurcher, you're right--I have been playing only the A and B parts--I guess I have another four parts to learn.

I know you'll want to send me a nice e-mail thanking me, but it's okay, you don't have to. It was an absolute pleasure to be able to help you out.

Re: Dingle session tune.

Just had a listen to these tunes. Here are a few observations . The first tune 'The wind that shakes the barley' is a short two part reel, but he played it eight times. Now that is what makes Irish Trad Music boring. It's a short reel, but three times is enough then change the tune. The second reel 'The Dublin Reel' a three part reel, usually played in the key of D, but I always feel that the G version with slight variations is a much brighter tune. You will notice that the fiddler dropped out for that tune and the piper pressed on and played the tune three times. Bad form to leave a musician sitting picking his nose. Play the tune twice and and then bring the other musician back to the fold by changing to something that you feel he may know.
The last tune was the Derry hornpipe, or the Londonderry, depending with what foot you kick with. They played four parts which is usual, but I have often heard five and sometimes six parts played to this great tune.
