Who's going to Stromness?

Who's going to Stromness?

I broke my leg and have to cancel 4 days' fun in Orkney Folk Festival

Scunnert is the word I believe. MAybe someone wants my B&B booking Thurs-Sun (yes I'm a softie) before I call them and cancel, nit sure if they'll accept a substitute but maybe

Re: Who's going to Stromness?

Sorry to hear that, Bren. I had thought of getting up there myself but it will have to be another year.

Maybe, see you at Keith this year? Hom Bru are back again.

Hope you get better soon.

Re: Who's going to Stromness?

THanks John, I'm determined to see Hom Bru one day, but the plaster will remain above the knee until end of July it seems

I think I'll have to initiate a series of house sessions meantime

Re: Who's going to Stromness?

My friend Peter's going. Look out for a man with a fiddle.

Re: Who's going to Stromness?

Bad luck, Bren. I missed your initial post. I hope your leg heals in time for the summer spate of festivals. I'd love to take your place, but it would probably take me a week to get there.

Re: Who's going to Stromness?

Possible itinerary, spoon:

Days 1 & 2 - Hitch-hike out of Wales to nearest English main line station;
Days 3 to 6 - Travel by Virgin Trains to Glasgow;
Day 7 - Fly to Orkney.

Less cynically, the railway from Inverness to Thurso (and thus Scrabster, for Orkney) affords amazing wilderness views, especially across the Flow Country of Caithness - a great tundra like nothing else I've seen in the UK.

Re: Who's going to Stromness?

Last time I went to Orkney (from London), I got the train to Edinburgh, cycled to John O'Groats and got a very small ferry across to Burwick. It took me about 3 weeks in all, with a couple of nights in Fort William and a couple in Inverness. Yes, The North Highlands and the Caithness coast are amazing - rough and rugged. The soft, green contours of orkney provide the perfect balance.

Sorry - this is probably all making Bren feel worse. But the landscape's there all year round (although you can't always see it). I missed the Orkney festival by a couple of weeks, when I was there in 1997.

Re: Who's going to Stromness?

Bloody hell spoon, was that during the war? I was just going to get the train to Thurso from Aberdeen, then the ferry, all in one day. Anyway I called the B&B and naturally he said he'll have no problem getting rid of the room. I was in Kirkwall in 2005 but haven't been to Stromness for 25 years so as well as being *scunnert* I'm also *seek*. I was looking forward to some soft, green contours and all. *sob*

Re: Who's going to Stromness?

I live in Orkney so it's no bother! what a fine festival it was! Haven't got the energy for some more sessions the night though! Hom Bru played a couple of shows but i never got to see them unfortunately!
